#NewbornScreening (NBS) is one of the most successful public health programs of all time, yet current limitations create a significant #equity challenge nationwide. It is unacceptable for a baby’s health outcomes to depend on their birth state. Political intervention is crucial to ensure equitable access to screening for all newborns. #Our recent study has found that #speaking to the public helps to address radiation risk perceptions. We #evaluated our #community #engagement programs and penned a paper published in the Sax Institute's journal Public Health Research and Practice #September 2023 #issue. We found that our health complaints register, established in 2003, was poorly utilised and did not assist in addressing community concerns when compared to our Talk to a Scientist service. "🏥 **Enhancing Patient Safety in Portugal: A Call to Action!** 🇵🇹 As healthcare professionals, stakeholders, politicians and advocates, it's crucial that we come together to prioritize and **improve patient safety** across Portugal's healthcare system. 🤝 In our country we need to go deeper and change what's beyond Patient Safety, mainly structural and procedural issues need to be part of this journey. Here are some key steps we can take: 👉1️⃣ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Invest in ongoing training for healthcare professionals, focusing on best practices in patient safety. 👉2️⃣ 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀: Develop and implement national patient safety standards and protocols covering critical areas such as surgery, medication prescriptions and hands hygiene. 👉3️⃣ 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: Utilize information systems and technology to enhance patient monitoring, reduce medication errors, and improve communication among healthcare teams. 👉4️⃣ 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Educate patients about their rights and responsibilities, encouraging open communication with healthcare providers. 👉5️⃣ 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Establish a robust system for reporting adverse events that protects whistleblowers and fosters learning from mistakes. Prevent and avoid the "Second Victim" raise. 𝑹𝒂𝑫𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒂 𝑽𝒂𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕 as a never forgot you and never again Event example on Healthcare Quality. "Second Victim" can not raise. Build a proper constructive phylosophy around REA. 👉6️⃣ 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀: Emphasize preventive measures like hand hygiene, infection control, and actions to reduce falls and injuries in healthcare settings. 👉7️⃣ 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: Promote research on patient safety and regularly monitor quality indicators in hospitals and clinics. 👉8️⃣ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Collaborate with international healthcare organizations to learn from best practices worldwide. 👉9️⃣ 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Implement mechanisms to hold healthcare institutions accountable for patient safety lapses while acknowledging and rewarding successful safety measures. 🌍 Patient safety is a global concern, and Portugal has an opportunity to lead the way in providing safe and high-quality healthcare. Let's work together to make patient safety a top priority and ensure the well-being of all our citizens.
