Unlocking the Fourth Dimension: How Synthetic Dimensions Are Redefining Physics Researchers developed adjustable arrays of waveguides that introduce synthetic modal dimensions, enhancing the management of light within photonic systems. This innovation has potential applications ranging from mode lasing to quantum optics and data transmission. In the realm of physics, synthetic dimensions (SDs) have emerged as a cutting-edge research frontier, providing a means to investigate phenomena in higher-dimensional spaces beyond our conventional 3D geometry. This concept has gained substantial attention, particularly in topological photonics, due to its potential to reveal complex physics that cannot be accessed within traditional dimensions. Shorter wavelengths = smaller focused spots This infographic shows how Blu-ray disks have smaller feature sizes than CD's that are read by violet lasers, rather than the longer infrared wavelengths used to read CDs This is the secret to Blu-rays' higher information density! The image shown here is one of the many in the great, freely-available book from SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics full of photonics-related infographics You can download a PDF of the book for free here: https://lnkd.in/gt9hruQy #Optics #Photonics #FreeBook #Lasers #LaserOptics #Wavelength #Physics #STEM #Science #DataStorage

XARION's optical microphone has been used to measure high-intensity ultrasonic fields in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Nature Photonics. Yannick Schrödel et al. from Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY Hamburg, the Helmholtz Institute Jena, and the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research Darmstadt showed deflection of gigawatt-scale laser pulses in air: they used an ultrasonic wave in air to build an acousto-optic modulator. Within the Max Planck Society, the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light has a research group led by Birgit Stiller focused on exploring the interaction between light and sound https://rb.gy/izoqd3. Where she has achieved, among other things, cooling traveling sound waves in waveguides of an optical fiber much more than has until now been possible using laser light, or the first observation of stimulated Brillouin scattering in the "twisted space" of chiral photonic crystal fiber ( PCF). This structure imposes a twist on the guided light, making possible novel studies of the interaction between circularly polarized light and microwave sound open up new opportunities for chiral optomechanics, with potential applications in quantum optics, fiber sensing, optical tweezers, Brillouin gyroscopes, and lasers. #MPSP #photonics #optoacoustic #quantum
