Dementia Deemed Highly Preventable: Here’s How https://lnkd.in/etrqr2Jh "Cognitive engagement–specific risk factors include social isolation, which is a major risk factor for dementia" Another demonstration of why #SocialPrescribing is crucially mentioned in the interim report for a major conditions strategy, and should be implemented as part of major conditions pathways from pre-diagnosis through to acute care: The report describes social prescribing as “one of the most exciting and impactful developments in rehabilitation in recent years”, and commits to exploring the possibility of expanding it into new parts of the health and care system.

We can tend to believe that dementia is about luck, and while there is an odds component to every disease, just like walking across a road, there are several modifiable factors that influence our risk. This study’s results might seem obvious, as many of us know that strong relationships and having enough money to not stress over food and shelter are important to quality of life near and long term. These are population data. What matters most is individual data, n=1. It’s one thing to know information but knowledge and application are not the same things. If there’s one place to try and excel and persist at the top of our game over many years, it is certainly cognitive health. The immediate benefits may not seem as obvious as bulking up muscle at the gym or leaning out like a marathoner, but for anyone playing the long game of life, it requires a similar priority. Several things that preserve the brain are the same we do for #heart #health, however #dementia is typically more #nuanced and we need to look well beyond the #cardiovascular system. And unlike the heart, there are few options to repair or recover lost cognitive function. We have to keep well out in front of it. Preserving peak cognitive health is a theme throughout my new book , #WHEALTHSPAN. https://a.co/d/isPI5bU https://lnkd.in/evENZi4N

Some really interesting thoughts from our Chief Medical Officer, Martin Thornton, reacting to the reports yesterday on risk factors that account for a significant number of dementia cases. This was also covered by the BBC 📖 https://lnkd.in/eVeUBqzC People often overlook what we consider to be really common medical issues and the links to other conditions. 🤔So consider a health check now, information is power and can lead to health confidence. Bluecrest Wellness can help. #healthscreening #prevention #wellbeing

Dementia is scary.... Really exciting news in dementia research: The latest The Lancet report identifies 14 modifiable risk factors accounting for nearly half of all dementia cases. A key addition? High cholesterol. I'm particularly intrigued by this finding. Cholesterol, a common and treatable condition, is now linked to about 7% of dementia cases - as significant as hearing impairment. This underscores the importance of regular health screenings. By monitoring and managing cholesterol levels, we may not just be protecting our hearts, but our cognitive health too. Let's embrace this knowledge. A simple blood test today from Bluecrest Wellness could be a powerful step towards a healthier brain tomorrow. How often do you check your cholesterol? #BrainHealth #DementiaPrevention #HealthScreening
