𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 & 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗮: "𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀" On August 28, the Next Food Collective directors Marian Geluk and Gerda Verburg visited FrieslandCampina’s R&D Centre in Wageningen to strengthen the partnership and discuss how as a collective we can speed up the crucial transitions in our food systems. They were warmly welcomed by Margrethe Jonkman, CTO and Wil van Loon, Director of Expert Team Food Physics & Chemistry and Partner-Board Representative, and the Programme Leaders from the R&D organization.     𝗔 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 During the visit FrieslandCampina presented their research initiatives clustered in four focus areas: sustainable farming, process technology, nutrition, and packaging. Furthermore, attention was paid to their sustainability program "Nourishing a better planet" and climate plans. It became clear that the mission of Next Food Collective, to accelerate the transition towards sustainable food systems and a healthy diet, fits very well with FrieslandCampina's purpose 'nourishing by nature' and R&D strategy. Overall, the meeting was extremely interesting and gave valuable input for further shaping Next Food Collective's themes and projects.    𝗔 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 FrieslandCampina aims to produce net climate-neutral dairy by no later than 2050. Its climate plan contains clear targets and concrete actions, with a checkpoint being a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. These goals are translated into research and technology projects.    This fall, a group of senior experts from Next Food Collective partners, including FrieslandCampina, will develop a cross-industry vision of what is needed to speed up the transition in the whole food industry. A specialist in the production of non-animal caseins by precision fermentation, Standing Ovation, has announced funding of €2 million granted by the French government for its 'CASPEX' project as part of the 'Agri-food Resilience and Capacity' call for projects under the France 2030 Investment Plan operated by Bpifrance, as well as a €1 million loan from Bpifrance called the Invest EU Green Investment Loan. "Standing Ovation's innovative approach enables us to contribute to the food transition while significantly reducing the environmental impact of the dairy ingredients industry," commented Romain Chayot, CEO & Co-founder of Standing Ovation. "Bpifrance's strong support is helping us to drive the industrial deployment of the unique process developed by Standing Ovation, an important step before the upcoming commercialization of our ingredients. We are proud and excited to announce our investment in Triplebar which aims to speed up the production of non-animal derived ingredients! Triplebar’s unique technology integrates hardware, software, biology and biochemistry to screen cells at ultra-high speed. This helps in bringing down the cost of key inputs for the production of proteins and ingredients with alternative methods like precision fermentation and cell-based production. We joined the $21m Series A funding round led by Synthesis Capital, and supported by amongst others Stray Dog Capital, iSelect Fund and The Production Board.   This investment seamlessly aligns with Rabobank's food transition strategy. To meet the growing demand for proteins and ingredients in a sustainable matter, a transition towards diversification of production methods aside the animal is necessary. The transition to a greener, more equitable, and sustainable Europe requires fostering trust in the agri-food industry. This is why EIT Food focused its roadmapping on three thematic axes – transparency, resilience, and fairness. 🔎🍏 A transparent food system is one in which all stakeholders and consumers have easy access to information in easily comprehensible formats regarding the production, processing, distribution, and sale of food. This includes information about the food's source, its cultivation or raising practices, and any certifications or labels that must be complete and clear. 💪🥕 A food system that is resilient is able to adjust to and bounce back from shocks like pandemics, natural disasters, and downturns in the economy. This entails having a wide range of supplies and techniques for producing food, as well as emergency food distribution systems in place. ⚖️🥦 Ultimately, a fair food system is one in which everyone in society, regardless of geography or financial level, has access to reasonably priced and healthful food. This means dealing with issues including food deserts, food insecurity, and worker exploitation in the food sector. The vision of a transparent, resilient and fair food system is highly transversal and can't prescind from tackling numerous issues and engaging a wide range of stakeholders, such as policymakers, farming communities, infrastructures, funding bodies, governments, NGOs, industry, the public (especially young people) just to name a few. In this scenario, Academia plays a pivotal role: here is were researchers are fostered and innovation begins.
