With a growing focus on #sustainability, efforts worldwide are focused on increasing #recyclability to achieve a more #circulareconomy. This is where #monomaterial packaging comes in. According to Marija Jović, technical director of PreScouter, Inc. and co-author of the report, "mono-material #packaging paves the way for the further development of #flexiblepackaging, especially as it is seen as sustainable and circular". This packaging material consists of layers of a single type of material, making it #recyclable. The flexible packaging market alone is estimated to grow by more than 4% in five years, with the greatest growth opportunities for single-material packaging in the personal care, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and food industries. R&D has shifted its focus to replacing the remaining 20-30% of total production that still relies on single material options for multilayer materials. A challenging part of the recycling process is sorting, or separating the various materials into cleaner streams, as each material requires specific process conditions to be recycled. This is particularly challenging for the flexible packaging industry because packaging often contains multiple materials, such as layers of plastics and metals, that are not easily separated and are sometimes unsuitable for large-scale recycling.
