I'm thrilled to announce that I've just completed another course on Delivering Integrative Care assessment offered by the Blackmores Institute and earned my CMEd certificate!
This course focused on the potential for pharmacists to integrate complementary medicines into patient care plans.
While there are undeniable benefits to this integrative approach, the realities of a busy community pharmacy can make it a challenge. Here are four key steps you can take to implement a professional integrative prescribing model in your own pharmacy:
Staff Training: Train your staff on complementary medicines and the prescribing model. A knowledgeable team can provide valuable support and consultations to patients.
Expertise Makes a Difference: Consider employing a complementary medicine expert or pursuing further education yourself. This specialized knowledge will enhance your ability to guide patients effectively.
Information is Key: Make sure you have written or electronic resources readily available for both staff and customers. This empowers informed decision-making.
Time Management is Crucial: Integrate integrative consultations strategically. Effective time management and delegation can free up space for these valuable interactions.
By following these steps, you can create a framework for offering a more comprehensive and patient-centered approach to healthcare within your pharmacy.

This year, one of my favorite publications turns 10 years old. 🎂 I particularly find Figure 2 useful in describing the role of board certification in the broader landscape of credentials held by pharmacists. There is certainly info to be added & revised thanks to a decade of advancement of pharmacists' education, training, qualifications, & roles!

Pharmacists: The Unsung Heroes of Healthcare's Future.
Imagine a world where your pharmacist does more than just dispense medications. The future of healthcare is unfolding, and at its heart lies a surprising yet pivotal player: the pharmacist.
Gone are the days when pharmacists were seen merely as dispensers of prescription drugs. Today, they are emerging as the linchpins of healthcare, offering clinical services that range from managing chronic diseases to providing essential health screenings.
But why pharmacists, you ask?
Firstly, accessibility is key. Pharmacists are arguably the most accessible healthcare professionals, with no appointment needed to seek their advice. This accessibility positions them uniquely to offer first-line health consultations, easing the burden on traditional healthcare settings.
Secondly, the depth of their medication knowledge is unparalleled. Pharmacists understand the biochemical mechanisms of drugs, their therapeutic roles, and their potential side effects like no other. This expertise is crucial in managing polypharmacy, especially in aging populations.
Yet, myths persist. Some believe pharmacists lack the clinical skills to play such a vital role in healthcare. This couldn't be further from the truth. Modern pharmacists undergo rigorous training, including clinical rotations, that equip them with the skills necessary to provide patient-centered care.
As healthcare systems worldwide groan under the pressure of increasing demand, pharmacists stand ready to bridge the gap between patients and accessible, quality care.
The question now is, are we ready to embrace this shift?
Let's start the conversation. Share your thoughts or experiences with the evolving role of pharmacists in healthcare.
"How can clinical pharmacists best advocate for their expanding role in a healthcare system that's often resistant to change?"
Strategies for Clinical Pharmacists
Demonstrate Value:
Track and document your interventions. Quantify cost savings, medication errors prevented, and positive patient outcomes.
Share these successes with physicians, administrators, and decision-makers.
Build Relationships:
Become an integral part of the healthcare team. Attend rounds, engage with physicians, offer expertise proactively.
Network with other pharmacists championing similar changes.
Get Involved:
Join professional organizations that advocate for pharmacists at a policy level.
Participate in committees where you can influence practice standards.
Consider writing articles or giving presentations about the value of expanded pharmacy roles.
Educate & Market:
Educate physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals about the scope of clinical pharmacy practice.
Create materials (brochures, infographics) demonstrating the pharmacist's role beyond dispensing.
