A New (actually old) and Effectjve Therapy for Childhood Allergies 2/27/24 An old asthma drug, Xolair, which is a monoclonal antibody that binds and neutralizes IgE - a central molecule in allergic reactions - has been repurposed as a food allergy drug in this RCT just published in the NEJM. This could signal a huge breath of relief for parents of children with multiple allergies - though it is costly and requires repeated administration. Despite society-wide efforts to bring attention to this matter (eg. every restaurant must ask its patrons if any food allergies exist), too many epi-pens are needed Each year in the U.S., it is estimated that anaphylaxis to food results in 30,000 emergency room visits, 2,000 hospitalizations, and 150 deaths. The perennial angst (and fear) of parents of children with serious food allergies at risk of anaphylactic shock is one metric that goes unaccounted. And it happens in adults too https://lnkd.in/ejfcKk3N Hopefully, the marked benefit seen in this placebo-controlled trial will foster new research to develop better agents that are oral (not injected). #peanutallergy #allergens #childhoodallergies #xolair

Many food allergens have been characterized at the molecular level, which has contributed to an increased understanding of the immunopathogenesis of many allergic disorders and might soon lead to novel diagnostic and immunotherapeutic approaches. The management of food allergies continues to consist of educating patients on how to avoid relevant allergens, recognizing early symptoms of an allergic reaction in case of accidental ingestion, and initiating the appropriate emergency therapy. New England Journal of Medicine Publishes Phase III Data Showing Xolair Significantly Reduced Allergic Reactions Across Multiple Foods in People With Food Allergies * Detailed results from the NIH-sponsored Phase III OUtMATCH study showed treatment with Xolair increased the amount of peanuts, tree nuts, egg, milk, and wheat that people as young as 1-year consumed without an allergic reaction. * The U.S. FDA recently approved Xolair as the first and only medicine for children and adults with one or more food allergies. * Allergic reactions can be life-threatening, and it is estimated that food-related anaphylaxis results in 30,000 medical events treated in emergency rooms in the U.S. each year.
