This week has brought immense challenges for all of us, and at Generational Noor, we extend our heartfelt condolences to all those who have suffered losses due to this tragedy. As the shelter-in-place is lifted and life starts to regain some semblance of normalcy, you might wonder, "What's next? How do we return to the way things were?" The truth is, we won't. Normalcy, as we once knew it, has been forever altered. Every one of us, directly or indirectly, has been touched by this event, and that feeling of "normal" has changed. It will take a long time for us to feel at ease in large gatherings, to send our children to school without a sense of impending fear. Some in our community have lost friends, neighbors, and family, and they will carry that sense of grief and emptiness every day. How do we find closure and heal from this tragedy? One thing that will always remain with the Lewiston community is our unbreakable sense of togetherness and connection, transcending differences in race and religion. When something like this affects one of us, it affects us all. At Generational Noor, we understand that as humans, we are naturally connected to one another, and this weekend has reinforced the importance of staying connected and looking out for one another, including our neighbors and especially the children who may be going through tough times. We are on a mission to ensure that every member of our community has the support they need. We're compiling a list of community resources in various languages, and we're thrilled to offer Zoom support groups open to everyone, young and old. With the school approaching, many young people may be grappling with unmet mental health needs. Rest assured, we are here, ready to lend a helping hand in any way we can, because your well-being is our priority. We invite you, the community, those who have been impacted and continue to be affected, to tell us what resources you need and how we can assist you. Please complete our survey or send us a text. Whether you're feeling depleted at a 1 or on top of the world at a 10, there's no right or wrong place on this spectrum. And remember, your number can and will change and being un sure of your number is just as valid. Also, feel free to direct message me your number if it’s more comfortable ❤️. I introduced this 'check-in' a decade ago as volunteer with The ELM Project / Camp AmeriKids. It became a way for us to show care without the pressure of explaining feelings. From from across the basketball court greetings to heartfelt one-on-ones and camp mail exchanges, simply asking 'what's your number?' has been a connecting thread for our campers and volunteers, allowing us to stay connected without needing to dive into the 'how or why' behind our emotions. Especially during the challenges of Covid, this tool was invaluable. Now, it's a part of my daily routine—used with clients, friends, before and after sessions or meetings. And for me, being asked my number is always appreciated. To manage expectations, if your number leans toward the lower end, say a 1 or 2, I’m going to follow-up—a chance to offer additional support, resources or just another moment of pause without pressure. This includes normalizing conversations about suicidal ideation and self-harm, something I’m profoundly grateful to have learned during my time as a Crisis Text Line counselor. So, I’d be honored to witness your number. Your mental-health matters, we are all just doing our best, you deserve tenderness and rest and I'm here, whatever your number may be. Society's conflicting messages affect us all, including men. The book "#ManUp" provides fresh insights into men's experiences. I urge everyone to read it, discuss it, and help break the silence around male mental health. All proceeds fund vital resources for men's healing. I meant to post this yesterday but my mental health is in the trash, I've started to lose track of days and I'm on my second week of an anxiety attack that refuses to let me catch my breath. I feel crushed by life. As a result, I haven't been able to keep up with sharing community care requests. But I can do this: Mutual Aid Mondays. I hope to do it more than once a week as I know many of our asks are urgent or time sensitive. At the least, there will always be a post on Monday. Well resourced community, please keep an eye out for the weekly thread and offer support on a regular basis. My fellow crowdfunders for survival, please ask for what you need. While I'm aware that this voyeuristic society loves a story, don't feel obligated to put your trauma on display - please only share to your comfort level. I've shared a link in the comments for a community member who needs our support to escape family violence. They need to stay anonymous for safety reasons. If your first reaction is that you *need* to know who it is, then take a moment to sit with why that is. A person is in need of support - that's all we need to know. If you aren't able to contribute then please SHARE. You never know who is on your timeline. Ask for help if you need it. Be yourself, just not too much. Do your job well, just not too well. Be the life and soul of the party, just don't outshine anyone else. Speak up! Just make sure it's not controversial or anything that might upset someone. Grieve, but not for too long. Parent, but not the way you want to. Study hard, just don't get too smart. Love deeply, but don't cry when it ends. Don't tell lies, but say sorry when you don't mean it. Raise children so they are responsible, but do everything for them. Teach kids the consequences of their actions, but don't discipline them. Be politically correct, just keep up with the ever changing goal posts. Respect and obey your elders and don't share secrets, but speak up if you're being abused. How many conflicting messages do we believe only impact women, children, people of colour and the queer community negatively, But then fail to extend the same courtesy to men? As a mother of sons, I have seen their fragility, their confusion, and their strength. And the older my sons get, the more I see men through a different lens. Reading the first #ManUp book in the series, curated by Steve Whittle, founder and CEO of Tough To Talk - Male suicide and mental health charity, I saw men on a whole different level. Ladies, make sure you grab your copy of #ManUp, buy it for your friend, discuss it with them, hold coffee mornings about the stories within, Because I know this book will change the way you see men forever. If you love your sons, your husband, father or brother, then this is the must read book of the year for you. Tampa Bay 44 is proud to be partnering with MTV for Mental Health Action Day. This #MentalHealthAction Day, MTV is proud to make grant funding available to empower nonprofit partners to produce innovative activations on the 4th annual Mental Health Action Day, a day dedicated to driving our mental health culture from awareness to action. What You Should Know: MTV is offering grants to qualifying 501(c)(3) organizations to activate on Mental Health Action Day: Thursday, May 16th, 2024.   Our goal is to support organizations with grants that can bring to life activations that reach young people directly, with a particular focus on those that reach communities lacking access to mental health resources. While no idea is too big or small, the majority of grants will be $2,500- $7,000 with a maximum of $10,000. Activations that engage their local community to learn and practice A.S.K. (Acknowledge, Support, Keep-In-Touch | asktohelp.com), the new ‘stop, drop and roll’ for emotional support developed in partnership with Active Minds, a leading youth-focused mental health non-profit, will be given special consideration as we aim to empower people to know how to respond when their friends or loved ones reach out to them for help. Today we want to join Mental Health Foundation in celebrating World Mental Health Day 2023. The day is about raising awareness of mental health and driving positive change for everyone, with the theme this year being "Mental health is a universal human right". But with consideration to the theme, we know that some people face more barriers than others to bringing a positive change to their mental health, and this is where support networks, charities and foundations come in to really help make a difference. However, we can all do something small each day for ourselves or someone else that may mean a huge amount on that road to positive change. Whether it's just taking the time to say hello and ask how a colleague is, making a phone call to check in on a friend, noting a change in someone's mood or behaviour and having a cup of tea with them. They all sound small, but can sometimes be the highlight of someone's day. But we feel the isn't something that only needs tackling in adults. Our AJB Active Minds programme works in schools and educational institutes to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing for primary aged children and delivers this in an accessible and positive way.
