The UK's Competition and Markets Authority is proposing to launch a market investigation into the vet sector, which is a sector that seems to have caused them concern for a while. A CMA market investigation is a big risk for the companies operating in a sector. The CMA has the power to fundamentally change the way they do business. In this case, the CMA is threatening to impose price caps and even force the divestment of vet practices, as well as to reform the regulatory framework and improve the information that consumers are given. The remaining independent surgeries may see the CMA’s intervention as an opportunity to achieve the reforms they want. One of the CMA’s concerns is the extent of consolidation that has occurred in the sector, with large corporate groups owning a much higher share of the market than they used to. However, the largest 6 groups only own 1500 out of the 5000 vet practices in the country. That doesn't immediately look like a problem, but presumably some local areas are more concentrated. The CMA would need to show why this is a problem for competition before having the power to break up these groups. I could also slightly mischievously note that the CMA has been clearing mergers in this sector, sometimes with undertakings in lieu, and it recently declined to investigate the acquisition of Dechra by EQT Group, the large private equity house. It also seems that the largest players offered the CMA a detailed package of undertakings to avoid the market investigation, which were refused by the CMA. Shares in CVS Group Plc (AIM:CVSG) were little moved by its #trading update, with analysts saying there was little new news, as the big news remains the ongoing Competition and Markets Authority review of the veterinary services sector. Revenue growth was up 11.9% in the four-month period to 31 October and EBITDA margins were in line with a year ago at roughly 19%. The group also announced four new acquisitions and drew attention to the launched of its new clinical governance framework, "demonstrating our commitment to driving standards of care across the veterinary profession". The #shares were down less than 0.5% at 1,492p on the morning of the update. Analysts at #Liberum said the numbers were tracking in line with consensus expectations.
