Policy Adviser, Centre for Net Zero

Short blog from me on UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) about flexible domestic heat and transport demand in GB's energy system, based on a paper from Centre for Net Zero (Octopus Energy Group) (with thanks to Lukas Franken for the modelling!). Even shorter version: ⚡ The potential is big: by 2030, using up to 30 TWh more renewable generation, reducing distribution capacity needs by 25%, and saving the system around £5bn each year by 2035. 🚗 EVs have an outsized impact early on: half of the benefits from EV flexibility are achieved in the first 25% of adoption. 🎯 Why not have flexibility targets akin to those government set for generation, as we've seen in California and Ireland - our modelling suggests domestic flexibility can shift up to ~30% out of peak demand load by 2030. https://lnkd.in/dmGfayJH #energy #flexibility #netzero
