Creating Ecologically Sustainable and Economically Viable Waste Management Solutions for a Circular Economy || Edmund Hillary Fellow
This documentary on the state of #water #infrastructure in #newzealand is a must watch for every citizen of this beautiful land. Firstly, kudos to John Campbell and 1 news for producing it. It is succinct and simple enough for most people to understand. Secondly, it focusses on the problems of water infrastructure in Aotearoa, which supplies context: this is a small country with abundant freshwater resources, and a relatively high level of development, but still the problem is manifestly large. Thirdly, it makes the need for a comprehensive solution apparent. So, one might ask, what can be done? The #solution has to stand on a tripod of Technology, Policy & Finance. Follow Alimentary Systems if this subject is of interest to you, and you'd like to know more about our work. https://lnkd.in/g-2idrKK

This morning our Deputy Chair Julia Prescot was on the opening panel of the @Water Report and Indepen #SocialContractSummit "on what water problems do we need to solve". One of the problems she said was ensuring England's #water infrastructure up to 2050 and beyond can respond to the twin challenges of a growing population and the impacts of #climatechange - i.e increased risk of dought, which necessitated the need to generate 4bn litres of additional water supply a day in England by 2050. Building new supply #infrastructure - along with tackling leaks and reducing demand - was one of the three key routes to solving this long term challenge facing the sector. With significant new infrastructure needing to be built - reservoirs, transfer networks - this required a #regulatory system that functions in a way that encourages investment into the sector when it's needed, but also ensures due attention is given to improving the #resilience and #maintenance of the system as a whole. Attracting investors into the market in the face of competition from attractive markets like the US also means addressing issues likely to give investors pause, such as the current slow pace of the #planning system for major infrastructure. The need for reform of the regulatory environment to drive the right behaviours from companies and investors on issues like #resilience and protecting the natural environment was the focus of much of the discussion with fellow panellists Colin Skellet of Wessex Water, River Action's James Wallace and Lila Thompson of British Water. As too was the importance of the need to rebuild the public's dented confidence in the #water sector and increase the #transparency of both how the sector operates and the costs associated with future-proofing our water system. To familiarise yourself with our recommendations on #water and #resilience in our 2nd National Infrastructure Assessment, visit the #NIA2 page on our website here: https://lnkd.in/eUsUEhCJ

There needs to be significant investment in filling identified data gaps to get out of the current reactionary cycle to drought and start long term planing for watershed security.
The Canadian Press recently interviewed our Executive Director Kat Hartwig along with Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship Nathan Cullen and other experts for this article on the growing concerns in B.C. around groundwater supply and use, and the need to fill gaps in provincial water data. “Hartwig, as well as Oliver Brandes, a lawyer and policy expert at the University of Victoria, and hydrogeologist Mike Wei, who retired from working for the province in 2018, say B.C. lacks sufficient mapping and details on groundwater sources.” CTV News https://lnkd.in/gCEzcHv4

The restoration of the Caminada Headlands, largely funded by BP settlement funds, has created dunes that support vegetation and serve as crucial barriers protecting inland areas and ecosystems. However, with BP-related funding set to disappear by 2032 and no replacement funds in sight, Louisiana faces a significant financial challenge to continue coastal restoration efforts amidst rising costs and increasing land loss. https://lnkd.in/gs2GhuVs
