Pakistan should have a better score next year due to female CM of Punjab. Although gender parity progress globally is slow, with the World Economic Forum projecting it will take 134 years to close the gap, the situation varies greatly worldwide. Iceland leads the way, having closed over 90% of its gender gap, followed by Finland, Norway, New Zealand, and Sweden. On the flip side, Guinea, Iran, Chad, Pakistan, and Sudan lag the furthest behind. India ranks 129, with challenges in economic participation, education, health, and political empowerment. After over two years under Taliban rule, Afghan women continue to endure profound challenges: limited mobility and freedom of speech, lack of autonomy and a ban on education. According to Taliban representatives, the ban on women’s education is a temporary measure, while the government prepares an “Islamic environment” that complies with their interpretation of Sharia law and meets the demands of the Afghan people. However, after two years, no progress has been made and there seems to be little indication the Taliban will indeed address the very urgent issue of gender inequality in Afghanistan and lift restrictions such as the ban on education for women.
