Earlier in the year, Invest in Our Future was delighted to learn that 11 of our grantees won awards from the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which promises to expand access to capital for clean energy projects in disadvantaged communities.   Some of our grantees produced fascinating proposals, like the Clean Energy Fund of Texas, Inc—a green bank within the Texas Solar for All Coalition that secured $156 million from the GGRF.   The Clean Energy Fund of Texas is going to use their portion of the award to finance solar and storage projects at over 40 minority serving institutions in Texas and other southern states. Half of the energy produced by these assets will go to the institution itself, and half would help power the surrounding community—lowering residential energy bills by up to 25 percent. At the same time, the Fund will be able to finance other sustainable retrofits, like heat pump and LED installations.   Invest in Our Future’s grant will provide the Fund with added resources to accelerate deployment GGRF dollars over the next five years while they simultaneously build up their nonprofit investment arm. Their goal is to establish themselves as a statewide institution there for the long haul. Construction has started this week on our newest wind farm: Stranoch, a 102MW wind farm in Dumfries and Galloway. We're working with local and Scottish businesses, where possible, to build the wind farm. This includes civil contractors RJ McLeod for the enabling works and family-run I & H Brown Ltd for the civil engineering works. When operational, more than £500,000 a year will be injected back into local projects and initiatives through a dedicated Community Benefit Fund. This amounts to at least £15 million investment into the local area over the wind farm's 30-year lifespan. Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (CPPAs) have been signed with Tesco and BAE Systems in partnership with EDF Business Solutions to purchase a proportion of the clean energy generated by the wind farm, with a third CPPA to be announced soon. Last week Calpine, the largest operator of gas-fired power plants in the United States, announced its acquisition of the 550-MW Quail Run Energy Center in Odessa, Texas. The acquisition is part of Calpine's plan to add over 1,000 MW of gas-fired generation in Texas over the next few years. Calpine has also brought online 1,600 MW of new gas-fired generation in Ohio and Pennsylvania over the last decade. Calpine is 13.4% owned by the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), where it's part of CPPIB's "Sustainable Energies" portfolio. 📢 We’re pleased to announce EDF Business Solutions and EDF Renewables UK & Ireland have signed two Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (#CPPAs) with Tesco, the UK's largest supermarket chain and BAE Systems, provider of some of the world’s most advanced defence, aerospace and security solutions. Tesco and BAE Systems are two of three offtakers, who will buy the entire generation of EDF Renewable UK's 102MW Stranoch wind farm, located in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The commitment from these corporate buyers allowed for a positive investment decision in the wind farm, enabling the construction of additional renewable generation to the UK. This marks a key milestone in accelerating Scotland’s journey to a Net Zero future, with the wind farm due to become operational in late 2026.
