🌍 Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool (CEJST) In January 2021, President Biden issued Executive Order 14008, leading to the creation of a new data tool developed by the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). The Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool (CEJST) is here to help identify and support disadvantaged communities facing significant burdens across eight critical categories: climate change, energy, health, housing, legacy pollution, transportation, water and wastewater, and workforce development. 🏡 Why is this important? By highlighting areas that are overburdened and underserved, CEJST helps direct resources and support where they are needed the most, promoting environmental justice and economic equity across the nation. 📊 Key Features: Disadvantaged Communities: Highlighted on the map with a blue circle, these communities are identified based on burdens experienced in their census tracts. Ranking Burdens: Uses percentiles (bell curve) to compare the extent of burdens among different tracts. Thresholds and Cutoffs: Determine if communities are disadvantaged using percentages or a simple yes/no approach. Federally Recognized Tribes and Alaska Native Villages: Land and point locations are highlighted, ensuring these communities are considered. Climate change, today's National Public Health Week theme, is only exacerbating inequities in public health. ICH believes that community-led organizations are the best way to identify solutions that are just, equitable, and focused on the people most at risk for environmental health hazards. Here are some community-led organizations that are fighting for environmental justice across the U.S. and here in Massachusetts: - Boston Climate Action Network - Mothers Out Front - GreenRoots, Inc. - Alternatives for Community and Environment #nphw #environmentaljustice

Decades of research highlight the intersection of high hazard exposure and poverty in disadvantaged communities. Geospatial environmental justice (EJ) tools like the Climate and Environmental Justice Screening Tool (CEJST) integrate health, social, and economic data to inform policy and investment decisions that address these environmental disparities. A new report from The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine evaluates EJ tools, emphasizing a structured iterative process for developing composite indicators and building transparency, trust, and legitimacy.
