Great recap by Joseph Trevithick of The War Zone of Secretary of the Airforce, Frank Kendall, interview at Center for a New American Security (CNAS) "The Air Force views CCA as complementary to the Pentagon's Replicator initiative that was announced earlier this year." This is critical. Neither CCA nor Replicator operate in a vacuum. We often hear the term "affordable mass" to describe a key tenet of these programs but that is only a part of the story. "Affordable Mass" against a true peer only works if the software is up to the task of operating multiple unmanned vehicles in denied environments. It is this shift to software that is one of the most exciting aspects of investing in defense technology companies. https://lnkd.in/gMVHZHna

WELL worth a read about the future of the USAF Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) sixth-generation fighter. NGAD has been a cornerstone of USAF future programs for at least ten years. The first sign of wavering USAF support was the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program designed to supplement the expensive manned NGAD with unmanned aircraft. Then, there were questions about the cost of the next-generation adaptive propulsion (AKA: the engine) and the need to make it less advanced. Finally, the CSAF and SECAF both raised the possibility of cuts or delays to NGAD. It is popular to claim that the manned fighter is a thing of the past, but let's think about that first. Cheaper drones won't need advanced propulsion. Does that mean we stop researching fighter engines? Drones won't need the same level of stealth as manned jets. What do we do tiny number of stealth experts in the US aerospace industry? Thoughts? #USAIRFORCE #drones #NGAD

Adaptation on the frontline🧐 The following video reveals an innovative behavior of the "LANCET" roving ammunition: unpredictable undulations just before impact.〰️ Why does this new behavior occur and what does it imply❓ This new behavior is an evolution of the final approach of these roving ammunitions that used to end their course in a straight line towards their target. The straight trajectory is generally easier to intercept with kinetic or laser systems ensuring short-range defense.💢 This new final approach with undulation is the solution found to make interception much more difficult: 🎯Disruption of aiming adjustments: The undulations make predicting the impact complex, challenging defense tactics. 🤖 Automation of guidance: These unconventional trajectories suggest automated guidance, potentially rendering jamming ineffective in the final approach. 🧠 Anticipation: This solution appears as anticipation rather than a reaction to a problem because interceptions during the terminal phase are rare. According to retired Army Gen. Mark Milley, a former chairman of The Joint Staff, robots and other smart machinery will comprise up to 1/3 of the US military in the next 10-15 years. - US Army is experimenting with what's known as human-machine integrated formations, where soldiers fight alongside automatons - United States Air Force is seeking so-called "collaborative combat" aircraft that can fly alongside human pilots to collect intelligence, confuse enemy electronics and even blow up targets - US Navy is in pursuit of a hybrid fleet, with unmanned surface and underwater vehicles augmenting the firepower of sailors and Marines. One pioneer is Task Force 59 in the Middle East #autonomoussystems #nationalsecurity #defensetechnology https://lnkd.in/gENefaXR
