On my way to the Texas Neurological Society annual winter conference in Austin to speak about caregivers of people living with dementia this weekend, I received news that a family member who is themselves a caregiver of a person living with dementia ended up in the hospital with stroke-like symptoms. More than a little bit distracted, I sped through my talk and turned right back around for Houston. The family member is back home and recovering. But the confluence of events conjured many questions for me. 1. Who takes care of the caregiver? 2. How can we better support caregivers to care for themselves when they are so busy caring for others? 3. When the person making the diagnosis of dementia hardly has the time to diagnose and treat, how can we support them to support caregivers? 4. How do we empower patients and their caregivers to advocate for themselves in health systems and manage their symptoms at home? 5. How can we build better for comprehensive dementia care? I don't have all the answers, but I am also certain we can find them together. I stand by what I highlighted in my talk - that the best way to support caregivers is to connect them to other caregivers (minimally of shared geography but ideally also of shared language preference and cultural heritage) and to place-based resources. Similarly, those of us in this work should be connected to tackle systemic barriers to diagnosis, counsel, care, and cure-finding. Who's seeing dementia patients in Houston/Harris County or Seattle/King County? Let's talk. #dementia #caregivers [photo: snowshoeing in Snoqualmie with my radical traveling nurse cousin and reflecting on the radical work we do at prognosUs]

Studies have shown that targeted dementia training for caregivers can improve care quality, reducing hospitalisations and improving client satisfaction. Early intervention can significantly enhance the quality of life for individuals with dementia. By addressing cognitive and behavioural symptoms early, homecare providers can help clients maintain independence for longer and engage in meaningful activities. Emphasising early detection and proactive management can lead to better outcomes and a higher standard of care for individuals living with dementia. (DEMENTIA ACTION WEEK 2024)
