Ableism measures the abilities of a disabled individual against a non-disabled standard, such as pursuing a "neurotypical" developmental progression, having specific expectations for "normal" body movements, and addressing attention and engagement in a manner that does not align with an autistic child's neurology. Register for our webinar presented by Lisa Marnell on June 18, 2024 to be able to: ✅ Identify two ableist occupational therapy goals from two neurodiversity-affirming occupational therapy goals and explain the rational for their classification. ✅ Reframe a child’s “deficit” as a strength and write a simple goal to use this identified strength to support the child’s occupational participation. Where are you currently practicing/what do you do in your current position? Hey, I’m Cornelius Dunn! I currently practice at Adult and Pediatric Counseling Specialists in Sandy Hook, CT. I’m an MFT Intern who supports Couples, Families, Teens, and Young Adults using Family Systems informed care. I’m particularly interested in working with men on issues regarding masculinity, self-esteem, relationships, family struggles, depression, anger, anxiety and problem video game behavior. What inspired you to become an MFT? I was inspired to become an MFT by my best friends’ mother, Cathy Roche. She’s really supported me during some deeply painful periods in my life in a way that few ever have. The further removed I became from my adolescence, the more I realized how special and healing her presence was. And so, fresh out of college, I thought, what a rockstar, I want to become someone like her! Her inspiration inevitably brought me to Southern’s MFT program, the same program she’d gone through. What do you think is the most important part of CTAMFT/why are you a member? The most important part about being in CTAMFT is feeling like I’m a part of a professional community that has my back. Sometimes being a therapist can be pretty isolating. Yes, I’m connecting with wonderful clients all day, but in private practice, I’m not always talking to my fellow therapists because they too are busy with their own caseload. Having a network of fellow therapists that I can reach out to and ask for personal and professional support is invaluable. Even getting something as simple as “I think you’re doing the best you can,” from a fellow therapist makes me feel less alone, and more capable of pushing through the harder days. What are your hopes for the future of our profession? I’d really like to see more Therapists gradually integrate psychedelics into their practice! As the research continues to grow regarding the therapeutic efficacy of Ketamine and Psilocybin, I think these substances, in certain cases, can be harnessed to facilitate incredible healing for people. I’m doing my best to educate myself on their upside and downside, because there’s many paths to healing, and for some, psychedelics can make a world of difference.

It would be difficult to imagine any part of your day in which you could not give or receive some form of communication. But for many people who’ve had a stroke, brain injury or neurological illness, aphasia has made an inability to communicate an unfortunate reality. Rehabilitative services, like speech and language therapy, can help those with aphasia restore as much of their speech and language as possible, help them communicate to the best of their ability, and learn alternative communication methods.
