Craig Sheach, Partner at PRP, is featured in Architects’ Journal discussing: ‘Is the Stirling Prize the architectural Oscars? "It is right to ask: should the Stirling Prize reward the serendipitous convergence of all elements (the perfect site, budget, practice, client, brief, outcome, etc)? Or should it be the exemplar of the genre that resolves the difficult and constraining challenges, offering the industry relatability and replicability, helping move the overall dial?" What to Read This #Summer 📚 'High-quality Architecture and Built Environment: a Political Goal'. On the occasion of a workshop organised as part of the 2023 UIA World Congress of Architects CPH 2023, the Architects' Council of Europe (ACE-CAE) and the Region I of the International Union of Architects (UIA - International Union of Architects Region I) released a joint publication entitled 'High-quality Architecture and Built Environment: a Political Goal'. This publication puts the spotlight on recent policy initiatives, at EU and national levels, that support a high-quality architecture and built environment, as well as Baukultur. High-quality #Baukultur is about society’s responsible handling of its built environment and its architecture. It requires and implies an increased participation of society in care for, and development of, the built environment, but also quality-based processes throughout the life-cycle of projects. Baukultur is a holistic approach, which cares for and seeks to achieve a sustainable society, with quality of life and collective well-being for all. I am looking forward to lecture on transformation and systemic change.
Today Tamara Kalantajevska and I hold a lecture Department of Architecture (D-ARCH) ETH Zurich. We discuss the ways that the practise of architecture is shaped by forces outside of the architect's profession and what that means for our potential to #transform buildings rather than #demolish them. We also look into the tactics and advocacy that one can take to flip the system. You can find a direct to the lecture here that takes place at 18:00 Central European time (Zurich) https://lnkd.in/dvT-6CPB? Following the lecture you can find it as part of a House Europe lecture series here: https://lnkd.in/dWWkJjzw

The small group of First Nations architects and academics has been shifting the Western paradigm of architecture in Australia for many years. This tireless advocacy has led to various framework documents, competency standards and other policy developments. Finally, we are witnessing a broader swathe of built projects that demonstrate best practice for architectural processes that champion Indigenous collaborations, histories and knowledge. We still have a long way to go; as Carroll Go-Sam and Deidre Brown observe, we are at the beginning of a process of change, but this new wave is yet to reach its crest. Nevertheless, Georgia Birks and I were excited to discover that a collection of projects in this issue of Architecture Australia captures a glimpse of the progress already made. From my perspective, having navigated both paths, I do think that the grass is a bit greener in Europe in that regard. The licensing process for architects in the United States is arduous, costly, and time-consuming, often spanning several years. Post-licensure membership in professional organizations such as the AIA or NCARB does not necessarily provide significant safeguards or advantages. Conversely, in Europe (at least in some countries), architectural fees, design competitions, insurance, and retirement plans are often regulated by the architecture chapters where architects are registered, affording a greater array of benefits to the profession. thanks for your insight in this article.
