Exciting news for Renewables Developers and Investors! A new support scheme is set to boost investor confidence by unlocking billions in funding for Long Duration Electricity Storage (LDES). This initiative is a significant step towards achieving net zero by 2050, with the National Electricity System Operator estimating a need for 11.5 to 15.3 GW of LDES. LDES technologies, such as pumped storage hydro, liquid air energy storage, compressed air energy storage, and flow batteries, store renewable energy until it’s needed most, ensuring a reliable supply for homes. The OFGEM-designed scheme features a 'cap and floor' model, providing revenue support to developers if their gross annual margin falls below a set ‘floor’ and sharing profits above a certain level with consumers. It includes two application routes: one for mature technologies and another for new innovations. For more details, reach out to Ben Sheppard and Shane Toal from our Infrastructure & Energy team. #RenewableEnergy #LDES #NetZero

Tremendous milestone for SMUD in progressing its goal to eliminate carbon emissions from its power supply by 2030. ESS, Inc. is proud to supply its safe, sustainable and American manufactured #LDES systems for this groundbreaking 3.6-megawatt, 8-hour iron flow battery project supported by a grant from the California Energy Commission. This project will set the foundation for future large-scale battery deployments in Sacramento. In partnership with SMUD, ESS, Inc. will deliver up to 200 megawatts / 2 gigawatt-hours of iron flow long-duration batteries by 2030. Once fully operational and paired with renewable energy, these systems are expected to eliminate approximately 284,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year from SMUD's grid.
We’re excited to announce that we've been awarded a $10 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) for our long-duration battery storage project in partnership with ESS, Inc.! The project will showcase the capability and reliability of iron-flow battery technology, which complements renewable energy sources like wind and solar by storing energy and strategically dispatching it based on demand to support the grid as we transition to a clean energy future! Today’s office! We are spending the day reviewing potential sites for new BESS projects, it’s important to make the most of opportunities where we can situate projects as close to existing infrastructure as possible. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are a critical part of the future of our National Grid as they store energy during times of peak generation from renewable and non-renewable sources. This energy can then be used when needed, such as during periods of peak demand, power outages or grid balancing to ensure that our electricity network continues to operate effectively. Windel Energy has over 3GW of BESS sites with grid connection agreements that are being actively developed, ranging from 150MW to 440MW. #BESS #batterystorage #nationalgrid #netzero

AEMO’s latest scorecard of generation & storage projects connecting to the National Electricity Market shows a record 19 projects (4.7 gigawatts) had applications approved in December, allowing these projects to progress to contracts and construction (pre-registration stage). The December results take the total approved applications for the first six months of FY24 to 7.5 GW, exceeding all approvals for the last financial year (37 projects, totalling 6.8 GW). AEMO Onboarding & Connections Group Manager, Margarida Pimentel, said: “Record application approvals in December highlight the momentum of projects working through the connection process. The 19 approved projects, including nine solar, nine battery and one wind farm, underline Australia’s energy transition towards low-cost, low-emission renewables supported by storage.” AEMO is hosting a webinar to talk through its new connections scorecard 2pm Friday 23 February - register here https://bit.ly/48UaOa7.
