Kudos to all the work being done to get visitors to return to Downtown Pittsburgh! A new report shows Downtown Pittsburgh achieved a higher percentage of returning visitors last year than nearly every city in the country except for three: 1. Minneapolis: 45.3% 2. Chicago: 35.5% 3. "This Discussion Paper, written by Leila Jancovich, Lucrezia Gigante, and, Claire Burnill-Maier,  open investigates mechanisms that have been effectively deployed to support local cultural decision-making. Drawing on theories of participation, co-production and deliberative democracy, it explores the risks and opportunities of approaches such as public value, co-production, citizens’ assemblies, participatory budgeting, community asset transfers and place-based funding".

Why urban regeneration projects need proper input from citizens. Successful urban regeneration projects require meaningful engagement, participation and involvement from residents. The recent report from the Campaign for the Arts and the University of Warwick is a crucial wake-up call for everyone invested in the future of the UK’s arts and culture. This comprehensive health check reveals troubling trends, especially the significant drop in student interest in GCSEs, A-levels, and degrees in music and other arts disciplines. Even more concerning is the fact that some universities are now dropping these courses altogether. This decline isn’t just a reflection of changing interests; it signals a dangerous stagnation in how we value the arts. The arts are not mere “extra” subjects—they are vital to our cultural identity, creative economy, and the well-being of society as a whole. Without them, we risk losing the richness and diversity that makes the UK a global leader in creativity and innovation. Now, more than ever, we must celebrate and invest in the arts. We need to ensure that students are not only encouraged but are given the resources and opportunities to pursue their passions in these fields. The arts should be championed, not sidelined. It’s time to act before we lose an irreplaceable part of our cultural fabric. Inclusive Workplaces: Navigating Identities and Intersectionality Join this FREE course to understand intersectionality and its crucial role in fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and included.

We were recently invited to write a commentary in response to Loretta Lees (MAE, FAcSS, FRSA)'s Dialogues in Urban Research article on engaged dialogue and the 'outsider-insider' tensions she negotiates. Our commentary article (co-authored with Steve Millington and Nikos Ntounis SFIPM) has now been published and is open access here 🔓: https://lnkd.in/ehMzGf_h We reflect on our (at times challenging) experiences doing engaged scholarship research at the Institute of Place Management, in relation to three themes raised by Lees: Our first theme– On being present– outlines the importance of producing knowledge in a collaborative way by engaging with a range of different voices 'on the ground' to more fully understand the complexities of place. Second– Engaging places– reflects on how engaged scholarship often requires working at inconvenient times and in terrain unfamiliar to many academics, working with places some might consider 'marginal'. As we observe: "A working man’s (sic) club, community theatre, market hall, sea cadets hut, library, church meeting room, swimming baths and even the cellar of a bar, are just some of the community spaces where we have run workshops for local communities. It has been important, where we can, to do this work in spaces familiar to local people... If we are to generate real-world change, the ordinary and everyday is where this work needs to happen" (p. 3). Third– Revaluing outputs– discusses being released from the shackles of the 4* REF agenda if we are to elicit real-world change by producing academic outputs that are valued and valuable to local communities, which in most cases is not an inaccessible academic paper. Whilst doing engaged scholarship research sometimes requires making compromises not always valued by all academic institutions, as we conclude in the article: "...we have no regrets. Tomorrow the Creative Practice Research Group within the Research Centre of Culture in Society at Queen Margaret University will be hosting ‘Making the Familiar Strange- Practice Research within Academia’, a day-long seminar aimed at exploring, demistifying and enhancing (creative) Practice Research as a methodology. I am delighted and honoured to introduce the talk of Professor Maria Chatzichristodoulou, titled ‘Practice makes (Perfect) Sense’ which will reflect on ‘trajectories of practice- research in British academic environments and in the context of the Research Excellence Framework, asking [amongst other crucial questions] what are the political and epistemological implications of Practice-Research methodological approaches, and why does it matter.’ 👇👇👇 As Maria also writes, ‘the purpose of the presentation is not to offer definitions but to invite reflection and exchange on a methodological approach that is both widely accepted as valid and, also, still in flux, and part of live debates that continue to define research in the field of arts and creative industries.’ Very much looking forward to it!😊 Professor Maria Chatzichristodoulou is Dean of Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of the Arts London (Chelsea, Camberwell and Wimbledon Colleges). She is Primary Investigator of the AHRC-funded ‘The Abundance Project,’ that aims to enhance cultural and green inclusion in social prescribing to address ethnic inequalities in mental health (£1.25M). Maria practices as a curator and has a background in theatre and performance, live and digital arts practices.
