Exciting to start the AVF year 2024 with our first Roundtable in Madrid. We observe a lot of interesting developments in Spain in the fields of Vertical Farming. Spain is one of the leading vegetable producers, 24,4% of EU's vegetable production on about 400.00 ha of land most of it in water-scarce Andalucia. Droughts and record heat are big challenges! Vertical Farming can be part of the solution when the government gets behind it.

To keep the land fertile, innovation must lead the way! 🌟 🌾 With sharing the same goal toward crop innovation, we are proud to announce that our partner, Foodscale Hub, based in Serbia, in collaboration with their partner, is spearheading efforts to accelerate the adoption of technology-driven innovations in the agri-food sector: Their focus lies on a 10-hectare experimental farm in Vojvodina, Serbia, where they facilitate piloting activities encompassing vineyards, apple orchards, wheat and oat fields, legume cultivation, and various other crops! 🌱 VALPRO Path is reshaping Europe's plant protein landscape by establishing 5 IPSs - Innovation Production Systems (pilots) in Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, and Denmark. These IPSs cover diverse pedo-climatic areas and focus on high-value protein crops such as peas, lupin, chickpeas, faba beans, and lentils. Over the past few months, I've been part of an incredible project that's pushing the boundaries of wildlife conservation technology. As part of the "AI for Forest Elephants 2" Challenge, I've had the opportunity to work on using AI to detect and analyse elephant rumbles in the dense forests of Central Africa 🐘🌍 . My focus has been on adapting the Google/Perch audio classification framework for elephant rumble detection. It's been a great experience to explore some bioacoustics data 👂🔊 and work with SOTA approaches and foundation models in this field. Here's a glimpse into what I've been working on: Embedding Generation: I used a pre-trained bird vocalisation model to create embeddings for our elephant audio data. It's amazing how well this transfers from birds to elephants! 🐦➡️🐘 Similarity Search: fine-tuning the similarity search process. Choosing the right target score is important - too high, and we'd miss important variations; too low, and we'd be swamped with false positives. 🎯🔍 Active Learning: This was where things got really interesting. I iterated through cycles of machine learning and human feedback, gradually improving the classifier's performance. 🤖🔁👨🏫 Visualising Results: One of my favourite parts was creating t-SNE plots of our audio embeddings. Seeing the clusters of rumbles emerge from the noise was incredibly satisfying! 🔬📊 The classifier achieved an accuracy of 0.76 and an AUC-ROC of 0.90 with minimal active learning iterations. 🎉📈 What strikes me most about this project is its potential impact.  Bioacoustics foundation models such as BirdAVES and Perch open up the possibility of allowing researchers to quickly and easily process Terabytes of data and develop classifiers for specific species/ call types/ sounds within large unlabelled datasets speeding up research and making it easier to answer important ecological questions. Beyond wildlife vocalisation, these models show promise in critical conservation efforts, such as detecting gunshots to combat poaching. This is not just about pushing technological boundaries - this is about developing tools that could make a real difference in elephant conservation efforts. There's still work to be done in this space both on the model development front but also in terms of making it easier to get these models in the hands of people working on the frontline of conservation efforts. But I'm excited about where this could lead. 🌱🕊️ I'm grateful for the chance to work on something so meaningful, and to collaborate with an amazing team of researchers and conservationists. It's another powerful reminder of how technology can be a force for good in the world.
