This time of year when so much of our focus is on food, let's not forget that food insecurity is very real for so many in our area. One solution to address food insecurity is the little food pantry (LFP) movement. In the past five years, our total food collection amounted to around 2 million pounds. However, in the current fiscal year alone, we are on track to exceed that amount. Why? Well to put it simply: we had to collect more because more people need our help than ever before. We're serving 56x more people monthly than any time in our history. And when people need our assistance, we do whatever we can to help. All of the food we rescue from places like Shaw's Supermarkets, Stop & Shop, Chick-fil-A Restaurants, and more is one of the key ways we are able to stock our pantry with fresh protein, fresh produce, and pantry staples. For what we aren't able to rescue, we buy. This allows us to ensure that our pantry is always stocked with culturally relevant and diverse foods that meet the needs of our community. It's no easy task rescuing more than 30,000 pounds of food alone a day and helping nearly 200 people a day access food, clothing, diapers, and other critical necessities. Especially as the need for emergency food assistance rises this winter, it's easy for anti-hunger organizations to become consumed by the need for more food. To get more food we must often sort through donations that are spoiled, ruined, or unsafe to eat. It is a laborious process evaluating what is worth passing on to our clients and what is waste, and it can be too easy to focus on salvaging as much food as possible rather than prioritizing the quality distributed. If we are committed to building food pantries that implement food justice, it's time to break this habit.

More and more people, many of which are children, are being priced out of healthy meals. Food banks have less resources yet are expected to feed more people. You can help by sharing this post! In my opinion, a lot of food waste comes from wanting to be a 'good host.' An example is always the number of condiment packages provided at food outlets with our purchases. Our vendors don't want us to run out and leave our meal halfway to get more supplies, so they over-provide.   It's a practice and mindset that I hope we can break soon. To make this possible, one must first understand what and how to store food. In storing food, one might want to consider the amount of food needed to be purchased and stores. This can be done by first checking how much is consumed daily, then you can now multiply by seven to know how much will be purchased for a week and then multiplied by 4, which will give you how much you did need for a month. It’s is very important to have in mind that cost of these food items depends on location or region. After this have been done, the next question is How to store them. This should be properly packaged and stored in a cool dry place so as to preserve them for the time it would be consumed. All of this his makes you a better Leader in your Home and community preparing you for emergencies and #foodshortage.

“The state is leaving nearly $3.5 billion in unused federal food benefits on the table because 30% of eligible residents aren’t signed up to receive them, one of the worst rates in the country,” reports Joe Garofoli with the San Francisco Chronicle. CalFresh is one of the most effective tools to address food insecurity. That’s why the San Francisco Marin Food Bank co-sponsored AB1967, a bill to create a cabinet-level food insecurity officer to reduce the bureaucracy that prevents families from getting benefits they’re eligible for and money needed to buy their children healthy food. We’re helping to lead the way, advocating for CalFresh reform, so that our state can unlock $3.5B in federal dollars for 2.7 million low-income individuals.
