The Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) industry is a crucial component in Malaysia’s path to net zero, complementing existing decarbonisation efforts. Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad emphasised that CCUS should not be seen as the sole solution but as part of a broader strategy. 📢 Greenhouse gas mitigation activity “Bangkok E-Bus Programme” delivers 1st #ITMOs under #Article6.2 of the #ParisAgreement for NDC use: https://lnkd.in/gmArvF6D   What is it about?   Energy Absolute Public Company Limited (EA) decided to use its core businesses to take concrete action against climate change. Replacing most of the privately owned buses with new #electricvehicles would significantly improve air quality and provide additional social and environmental benefits. To make the switch from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles financially viable and not increase bus fares, Energy Absolute decided to develop the programme under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and raise money by selling emission reduction attestations known as Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs).   This Bangkok E-Bus Programme as a greenhouse gas mitigation activity is privately owned and financed, outside Thailand’s unconditional NDC. It was authorized by the governments of #Switzerland and #Thailand. The Programme does not target the buses owned by the Thai Government.   The first pilots could be seen on the streets as early as 2021 and early 2022 to test modalities and routes. Today, for the first time, we celebrate the International Day of Clean Energy! 🌍 This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly on August 25, 2023, and the chosen date, January 26, recalls the founding anniversary of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in 2009. By creating an international day for clean energy, the United Nations aimed to emphasize and remind the world of the importance of committing to universal access to clean energy, a fundamental objective, particularly for achieving the climate goals outlined in the Paris Agreement. It is therefore important to remember how clean energy can change the lives of millions of people, and we can only reiterate our commitment to a clean cooking world to provide sustainable and reliable energy for all. Here are some important data that remind us of the urgency of rapid action: - Dirty cooking represents 2.1% of global CO2eq. emissions, which are equivalent to all aviation CO2eq. emissions; - 746 million people around the world are still living without electricity; - 2.7 billion people (about a third of the global population) cook daily with dirty fuels, such as solid biomass and kerosene. Let’s advocate for clean cooking solutions, support initiatives that promote access to clean energy, and encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies.
