In Victoria, we are blessed with clean water supplies. The way we manage this precious resource will be a critical factor in the successful future management of climate change threats. This topic was a key focus of a panel discussion I participated in today at the State Library of Victoria, focusing on the significant strides we've made in Integrated Water Management (IWM). This event was a celebration of the collaborative efforts under Victoria's IWM policy, including the completion of the inaugural Catchment Scale IWM Action Plans. As CEO of the Municipal Association of Victoria, my contribution focused on the vital role local governments play in embedding environmentally sound water practices into the fabric of our neighbourhoods. MAV has put the spotlight on sustainable resource management in our recently-released strategic plan, where key focuses include climate, regenerative design and the development of intergenerational Infrastructure. Victoria’s IWM approach, which was developed as part of the State’s long-term plan ‘Water for Victoria’, features a comprehensive framework to manage water resources sustainably across our cities and towns. This policy has paved the way for transformative changes, emphasizing the integration of water cycle management with urban planning to enhance liveability in the face of climate challenges and rapid urban growth. Today’s panel, expertly moderated by Virginia Trioli, was an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into how these policies are being brought to life. We discussed the progression from strategic planning to tangible implementation, with each of the 50 IWM Forum partners playing a critical role. These forums enable a collaborative approach, bringing together diverse stakeholders to drive forward the vision of resilient, thriving communities through innovative water management strategies. A heartfelt thank you to IWM Forum Chairs, to all participants and organizers for an enlightening and inspiring discussion. We are on a promising path, and I look forward to continuing our work together to make our cities and towns more sustainable and resilient for future generations. We are thrilled to announce the publication of our final Water Resources Management Plan 2024, which has recently been approved by Defra's Secretary of State, Steve Reed. This plan is a pivotal step forward in our journey to ensure a secure and sustainable water supply for our communities while addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change. Here are some key highlights from the final publication: 🌊 We're fast-tracking abstraction reductions in critical areas, ensuring more water remains in our rivers. Our collaboration with the Chalk Streams First initiative enhances our strategies for sustainable water management. 💦 We're reducing leakage by 50% by 2050 and installing 1.5 million smart meters by 2035 to promote water efficiency. 👷♀️ New projects will improve water transfer and resilience, including the Grand Union Canal Strategic Resource Option, set to deliver vital resources by 2032. Our Director of Asset Strategy and Capital Delivery, Stephen Plumb, discussed the changes: “Our approved plan reflects both public input and the latest regulatory guidance, ensuring that we meet future water needs while protecting the environment and delivering value to customers.” 🔗We invite you to explore our WRMP submission and discover more: https://bit.ly/3YdyaDB Together, let’s secure a sustainable water supply for future generations! 💧💚 #sustainability #environment #innovation #news #watercompany

#ThrowbackThursday! Today, we're revisiting Oceanit's innovation that helped protect Oahu's environment. In the late '90s and early 2000s, Oceanit conducted a comprehensive Inflow & Infiltration study of the City and County’s wastewater sewer lines. Over eight years, we assessed sewer flow conditions, pinpointing pipeline damage that led to hazardous sewage spills. This crucial study not only identified the root causes of environmental risks but also provided city officials with an online platform to access the data. The insights from this project laid the groundwork for improving wastewater infrastructure and protecting our community’s health and ecosystems. #EnvironmentalProtection #Wastewater #Hawaii #Sustainability #CommunitySafety #publichealth

Big shoutout to Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) for their work in publishing guidelines for managing Scope 3 emissions in the water sector! Did you know that Scope 3 emissions can account for 70-90% of a company's total emissions? For water utilities, these emissions are heavily tied to the embodied carbon in building and maintaining critical infrastructure and assets. Addressing these emissions is key to mitigating risks, aligning with the Paris Agreement, and supporting Australia’s Net Zero goals. WSAA’s leadership in this area sets a commendable example for other sectors to follow. Read WSAA’s guideline here 🔗: https://lnkd.in/gU7d4mrX Looking to decarbonise your water assets? Non-revenue water (NRW) causes operational problems, leading to wasted resources, higher energy use and environmental damage such as reduced river flows and disturbed ecosystems. These issues also cause service interruptions and affordability challenges, especially for lower-income families. At LDRM, we specialise in detecting water leaks to help tackle the global problem of NRW. ldrmgroup.com #NonRevenueWater #NRW #LeakDetection
