**The Power of Focus: Lessons from the Studio**
When I was a rock DJ in Wilmington, NC, our studio was a multi-windowed room in the main hallway, positioned so you could see everyone passing by—and they could see you. It was always neat for visitors to witness the “inner workings” of a real radio studio. 🎙
When there weren’t visitors around, you might find an off-air jock attempting to rattle whoever was on-air, performing like an insane mime framed by a window resembling a large flat-screen TV. The goal? To create a flub or, better yet, make them laugh. 📺
It was a badge of honor to not break. To make it through the scripted promotion or complete your thought without getting derailed. I took immense pride in remaining steady in the face of some seriously hilarious (and often obscene) antics. 😬
As it turns out, this was great practice for every on-location situation you could ever be placed in. Wherever we went, there was always a chance that something would go sideways, whether due to human error or natural intervention.
And it was on us to keep the train from jumping the track. 🚂
**Why is this important? Focus!**
These days, those hilarious (and not-so-hilarious) distractions come in more forms than ever, in more places than ever, and in situations that are more important than ever.
The ability to focus on what is directly in front of you with intent is crucial, whether it’s a project, an event, or your relationships.
**Assignment:** You can play our little studio game at home or in the office. Think of those moments when you need to perform your best and then consider the possible distractions: a ringing phone, another email, the sound of an instant message, and more.
Then, shut them out and just perform. 🎭
It might take a little practice, but soon you’ll become unshakable!

3moWhat a great place to have in Levine Children’s Hospital. I love the creative approach to how the space is used.
