I'm pleased to share an article I was lucky enough to co-author with Mona M. Forster, MBA, ICD.D: "Navigating net zero: Opportunities and challenges" published in this month’s Canadian Mining Magazine. The article discusses the critical role junior explorers and miners play in the global transition to a low-carbon economy. The exploration of critical minerals (for example copper, lithium, nickel and cobalt) by junior miners is at the headwaters of the value chain of almost all "clean technologies” such as EVs, wind turbines, rechargeable batteries and solar. Critical minerals exploration is a low emission activity in general, with little to no environmental or social footprint. However, junior explorers and developers are still coming under intense scrutiny from both investors and regulatory authorities. Key insights in the article include: *Regulatory and Investor Landscape: An examination of the evolving regulatory demands and investor expectations for transparent climate-related disclosures and sustainable practices. *Challenges and Opportunities: The unique challenges faced by junior miners, from physical and transition risks to technological and regulatory hurdles, and the opportunities they present for innovation and strategic positioning. *Technological Innovations and Industry Support: The role of tools and frameworks like PDAC's GHG calculator and e3 Plus in aiding junior mining companies to manage their carbon emissions and align with sustainability goals. *Strategic Implications: The importance of integrating sustainability into business strategies for long-term competitive advantage, investor attraction, and compliance with national and international goals. Mining budgets are often seen as a safer bet, offering a 100% guarantee of profit once operations begin. This assurance naturally drives higher investment, leading to ever-increasing mining budgets. On the other hand, exploration budgets tell a different story. Exploration is inherently risky; the success rate can vary dramatically, from nearly zero in some cases to very high in favorable scenarios, such as iron ore (Fe). This uncertainty often leads to cautious investment, resulting in lower exploration budgets. However, as the world shifts from fossil fuels to green energy, this approach needs a rethink. 🌱 The transition to renewable energy sources requires the discovery of new mineral deposits essential for technologies like electric vehicles and solar panels. Without a significant increase in exploration budgets worldwide, we risk falling short of the raw materials needed to power a sustainable future. Culpeo Minerals Ltd. (ASX:CPO, OTCQB:CPORF, BUY (S), Taylor Combaluzier) reported rock-chip sampling results from the La Florida prospect of its Fortuna Cu project in Chile. All 14 samples collected returned anomalous grades of up to 3.96% Cu and 2.61 g/t Au, delineating a N-S trending Cu-Au porphyry over an area of 1.7km x 0.5km. Notably, mineralization is analogous to that identified at Culpeo’s Lana Corina project, located ~10km to the north. A follow-up infill sampling program is planned to further define drill targets at La Florida. Meanwhile, we look forward to the results from the 2023 drilling at the El Quillay prospect and the initial drill program underway at the Vaca Muerta prospect.
