Another step towards the energy transition was taken in Hamburg today: Our partner Hamburger Energiewerke GmbH is reporting good progress on the construction of its heat storage tank at Veddel. 🏗️ Today a heavy-duty crane lifted the dome roof weighing around 72 tons up onto the heat storage tank. ♨️ In the future, the 35-meter-high storage facility with a diameter of 14 meters and a capacity of four million liters will store the industrial waste heat from our Hamburg Aurubis site. 🏘️ The heat will be fed into the Hamburg city grid to supply around 20,000 households with carbon-free district heating. This will prevent around 100,000 tons of CO2 emissions every year. CEOs vs. Green Deal: The Right Path to Sustainability? Ahead of the European elections, leading executives from German companies are calling for changes to the EU Green Deal. KEYOU meets politics: Our CEO Thomas Korn at the 22nd Energy and Environmental Policy Conference in Berlin.   The Energy and Environmental Policy Conference is an established flagship event of the CDU Economic Council, which this year took place under the motto "Energy and Environmental Policy at a Turning Point - The Return of Strategic Thinking". The event is known for bringing together leading German and European politicians with leading German and European energy and industry executives to discuss the strategic direction of energy and climate policy.   In this context, our CEO Tom Korn participated in a panel discussion on "Electrons and molecules - enabling an efficient drive mix". The panel was moderated by KRONE Managing Director and Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA) e.V. Board Member Gero Schulze Isfort. I had the privilege of participating in this year’s Genshagen Energy and Economy Dialogue under the theme: "Green Weimar Triangle: Shaping the Sustainable Future of European Industry Together." Stiftung Genshagen and Germanwatch e.V. organized the event in collaboration with AHK Polska and Ambassade de France en Allemagne. It brought together nearly 50 high-level participants, including government representatives, energy-intensive and cleantech industry leaders, and top European think tanks from Poland, France, and Germany. Together, we explored strategies for a cohesive, Clean Industrial Deal aligned with the EU’s climate neutrality goals and its pursuit of economic resilience and competitiveness. Key takeaways from our discussions on the Green Weimar Triangle’s potential include: ✅ Prioritising the EU’s climate neutrality target while maximizing economic benefits from pioneering green policies. ✅ Strengthening competitiveness and resilience through forward-thinking investments and infrastructure. ✅ Embracing diverse national contexts and leveraging opportunities within the Single Market. CCS is one of the hot topics in the German climate and environmental debate. So it's quite fitting that in August we had the pleasure of welcoming news channel ARD to Brevik, showcasing our #CCS project. The resulting report shows clearly how different the challenges related to CCS are in the respective markets. While research and implementation began for us many years ago in Norway, with a project supported both politically and by the local population, we see a slighly different debate in Germany. But one thing is clear: #CCS is also essential in our home market to fully decarbonise the cement industry. ◾ With the current cornerstones of the #CarbonManagementStrategy (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz) and a legislative proposal, we have taken a major step forward. Now, the necessary legal changes must be made quickly so that the industry has investment security. ◾ It is crucial that a targeted CO2 infrastructure is established and promoted in Germany over the next few years, and that specific CCS projects are implemented by the industry. ◾ As part of the hard-to-abate industries, we are taking the initiative and want to invest in Germany as an industrial location for the long term with cutting-edge projects like our CCS project #GeZero and our CCU project #Cap2U.
