The automotive repair and maintenance sector is a crucial part of Australia's automotive industry, employing 158,500 workers across various specialties such as auto electrics, mechanical servicing, and body repairs. The number of service and repair workshops has increased by 11.5% since 2021, which is indicative of the growing vehicle numbers and demand for maintenance services. The sector is involved in identifying future requirements for servicing EVs, including the role of licensing for EV technicians. There is also a focus on recycling and end-of-life management for EV batteries, highlighting the need for new skills and training. I tell semi-amusing stories about my life as a Car Finder whilst helping as many used car buyers as I can with useful knowledge... because buying a car can be tough! (I also help lots of executives relocating to the UK.)
WILL THERE BE ENOUGH TRAINED ELECTRIC VEHICLE MECHANICS IN THE FUTURE? The Institute of Motor Industry (IMI) is predicting a shortfall of 3,000 EV technicians by 2031... and a whopping 16,000 by 2035! Currently, 24% of the UK automotive workforce are qualified to work on electric vehicles but the IMI is worried that we will need many more And it varies, area to area. For example, in London and the South East, there are more electric vehicles on the road but not a proportional increase in people qualified to service and repair them. Does this mean that the future of electric vehicles is doomed? Far from it, we just need more trained mechanics... or should that be electricians? Something which will most likely naturally happen as demand for traditional car mechanics reduces. I'm not going to worry just yet.

🚗 "Encouraging Growth in EV Technicians, But Skills Gap Remains" 🌱 The IMI's latest data shows 58,800 UK technicians are now EV-qualified, up to 24% of the workforce in 2024. Yet, a critical skills gap persists. Despite progress, a shortfall of 3,000 EV technicians by 2031 and potentially 16,000 by 2035 looms, especially with the 2030 ICE vehicle ban. Regional disparities add to the challenge—London and the South East lag behind while the East of England leads. Utilise specializes in staffing for Utilities & Highways Infrastructure and aims to bridge this gap. We urge the automotive sector to ramp up EV technician training for equal access nationwide. Thoughts on the EV skills gap? Affected? Discuss in the comments! https://lnkd.in/eFAxTtfP #ElectricVehicles #SkillsGap #AutomotiveIndustry

According to the latest SMMT (The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) report, in January 2024, there were over 1.000.000 BEVs and 600,000 PHEVs registered in the UK. With a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars coming in 2035, carmakers are expected to wind down their internal-combustion engine offerings in the coming years. The IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) predicts that by 2030 the sector will need more than 107,000 EV repair technicians, increasing to 139,000 by 2032, and 185,000 by 2035. Currently, there are just over 50,000 trained EV technicians in the UK. If current training trends continue, it is expected that there will be a shortfall of 30,000 EV repair qualified technicians by the time the ban of new ICE vehicle sales comes into force in 2035. image source: Delphi Technologies

Mercedes Benz C350 CDI Fault Code: 126a00 Component "M55(intake port shutoff actuator motor)"is faulty. "Automotive Technician is a profession, but troubleshooting is a talent. Not everyone is so precise on troubleshooting, but rather only few individuals who chose to cultivate their talent through extremely hardworking and determination" Getting a fault code is just the commencement of troubleshooting, it doesn't imply that the problem is over, but rather it's a guild line that make the life of a technician easier. With this vehicle, it was giving the above fault code, the result was lack of engine power output and a cloud of white smoke was produced from the exhaust system. I decided to check the "actuator motor(Component M55)" that facilitate the opening and closing of intake flaps, these intake flaps will open to allow the new charge into the cylinders depending on engine requirements that is load and speed among others. Upon dismantling l realized that the flap arm that connects the "actuator motor" to the intake flaps was out, clips were missing. This means that, the intake flaps were at a closed positions, by so doing, there was limited volumes of new charge from the turbo charger to the cylinders resulting in reduced engine power output and smoking(white smoke) l went further to place an order a new flap arm but also carrying an actuation test for an "actuator motor" was necessary to ensure for proper functionality. #AutomotiveTechinician #MercedesBenzC350CDI #ComponentM55ActuationTest #CultivatingTheTalentofTroubleshooting

*Our Services* *Standard Vehicle Inspection* *A standard vehicle pre-purchase* inspection is a comprehensive evaluation of a used vehicle conducted by a qualified mechanic or an automotive technician before finalizing a purchase. The goal of this inspection is to identify any existing issues, safety concerns, or necessary repairs that may not be apparent during a casual examination or test drive. ### Key Components of a Pre-Purchase Inspection: 1. **Exterior Examination**: - Inspect for any signs of damage, rust, or previous repairs. - Check the condition of the paint, windows, lights, and tires for wear and tear. 2. **Under the Hood**: - Evaluate the engine for leaks, condition of belts and hoses, and overall cleanliness. - Check fluid levels (oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid) and their condition. 3. **Mechanical Systems**: - Conduct tests on the braking system, suspension, and steering components. - Inspect the transmission for responsiveness and any unusual noises. 4. **Interior Inspection**: - Assess the condition of the seats, dashboard, and controls. - Test electronic systems, including lights, air conditioning, and infotainment systems. 5. **Test Drive**: - Evaluate the vehicle's performance, including throttle response, braking effectiveness, and overall handling. **PLEASE NOTE THIS STANDARD INSPECTION DOES NOT INCLUDE A DIAGNOSTIC REPORT**: ### Conclusion: After the inspection is complete, the mechanic will provide a detailed report highlighting any issues found, estimated repair costs, and recommendations. This information is crucial for potential buyers to make informed decisions and negotiate a fair price based on the vehicle's condition. By investing in a pre-purchase inspection, buyers can save themselves from unexpected expenses and safety concerns down the line.
