Ahead of the #GeneralElection, we are calling on every political party to prioritise support for the 2 million disabled children in the UK and their families. Immediate fixes are needed to prevent more families with #disabled children from falling into crisis because of chronic waiting lists and system failures. All disabled babies and toddlers must be able to get a #childcare place that meets their individual needs – ensuring their equal rights to an early education. Every disabled young person – especially those with the most complex needs – must get tailored, timely and clear support on their journey to adulthood, so the chance to live a good adult life becomes a reality for all. Finally, every family with a disabled child must have help to navigate the complex system, so they can enjoy family life, work and leisure, instead of battling bureaucracy. Well done! AOTA's Susan Cahill PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA , APTA's Toby Long, and their work group created this recruitment and retention guide for the Early Childhood/Education/pediatric rehab fields. As a colleague, I would love to know how I can best support others in their roles. What do YOU need to feel safe, secure, honored, and valued in your work place? There are so many great strategies that are above my pay-grade (Such as "loan forgiveness", yes please!) but others we can implement in our own settings. Suggestions and examples are welcome.

Guardianship does not prevent your adult child from buying a boat on eBay, opening 16 credit cards while on a trip to the mall, or hitching a ride two hours from their home to visit a friend. But sometimes parents feel pressure to put guardianship in place simply because their child is turning 18. It is important to understand that there are a wide range of options for decision-making in adulthood and one of the best ways to really protect your child is to help them build the skills to be as self-determined as possible. We want our kids to know which choices they can make themselves, which choices they can make with support, and which choices they might want someone else to make for them.
