Gate terminal B.V., a pivotal player in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, has launched a non-binding call for expression of interest to gauge market demand for small-scale ship loading services at its upcoming jetty, Jetty 4. This strategic move aims to assess interest in the provision of loading services for LNG, Bio-LNG, and synthetic LNG. Currently, Gate Terminal operates small-scale ship loading services primarily for the marine bunkering market at Jetty 3. **Understanding Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)** Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been cooled to a liquid state, at about -162°C (-260°F). This process reduces its volume by approximately 600 times, making it easier and more efficient to transport over long distances where pipelines are not feasible. **Key Points about LNG:** 1. **Production**: LNG is produced by cooling natural gas in a liquefaction plant. The cooling process removes impurities such as water, carbon dioxide, and sulfur compounds. 2. **Transportation**: LNG is transported in specially designed ships with insulated tanks. These ships, known as LNG carriers, are essential for moving gas across oceans to markets that lack direct pipeline access. 3. **Regasification**: Once LNG reaches its destination, it is converted back into gas at regasification terminals. This gas is then supplied to local distribution networks for residential, commercial, and industrial use. 4. **Environmental Impact**: LNG is considered a cleaner alternative to coal and oil. It produces fewer greenhouse gases and pollutants when burned, making it a more environmentally friendly fossil fuel. 5. **Global Market**: The LNG market is rapidly expanding. Countries like Qatar, Australia, and the United States are major exporters, while Japan, South Korea, and China are leading importers. 6. **Applications**: Beyond power generation and heating, LNG is increasingly used in transportation, particularly in shipping and heavy-duty trucks, due to its high energy density and lower emission.
