🔍 Long-term GP vacancies still running at 22% A new survey from the RCGP has found that despite GPs’ best efforts to find work, more than one in five practices said they have vacancies they haven’t been able to fill in more than three months. This survey suggests yet another disconnect between what we hear about the lack of GP appointments and lack of GP jobs; we now need qualitative research to find out why GPs aren’t being recruited into these long term posts. Is it poor pay, or is it the practice’s choice of IT system? Could it be significant relocation costs, or that the practice is in a small rural community with no amenities; could poor transport links or lack of reserved parking be a buzzkill? The list of reasons are myriad, with many if not all potentially surmountable, but each one impossible to mitigate if we don’t know why these posts are being shunned. Or maybe there are alternative solutions? The RCGP have told all political parties to listen to them, so we are telling the RCGP to listen to us: research shows GP locums are a high-quality alternative to substantive roles, and intelligent, agile platforms like LocumDeck, with real-time booking, are covering up to 97% of all vacancies when deployed by ICBs. Perhaps it’s time to properly explore the role of short term GP locums as being a long term viable solution. We are pleased that Sunderland City Council is now the latest local authority to partner with us at Curam. Including Sunderland, 27 local authorities are now using our national platform, and it is free for councils to use the portal, post a job and to add clients who are in need of care. We now have well over 8,000 vetted carers, who are fully vetted, DBS checked, insured and have access to free CPD training to enhance their skills. Here at Curam, we are the only national home-care platform of its kind. We are looking to transform the care system, addressing the critical shortage of trained and vetted carers – currently estimated to be 165,000. The toughest part of any additional service program is the scheduling of the service and or product to the resident. Staff sickness, resident availability can all impact upon delivery. How do we know? We deal with it everyday at Quality INSITE. Many digital services can assign a service or product but next to none can schedule and reschedule a service when and where required and then record the outcome. Again, how do you know I hear......We looked, demo'd, discussed and the best option was to get a big guy to use our IP to make something for themselves to market. Not this group, we got our developer heads together and our background knowledge in delivering services on a schedule and Schedule MEE is born. Schedule MEE takes the resident list and staff list and co-ordinates the delivery of additional services for a Residential Aged Care provider. It then allows the provider to record, and transmit the service delivery status. The status is always delivered, refused or make good (which needs to be rescheduled). Staff can see a proper schedule on a digital platform, accessible from a device not a spread sheet on a piece of paper. If there are changes to be made, they can be done in real time allowing for a quicker reaction to sorting services. The Residential Aged Care provider, senior leadership team and board can rest easy knowing they have a digital option that is compliant to the requirements in running an Additional Service program. Reporting capability, open API and further updates will ensure Schedule MEE is helping build the reputation of the RACF AS program. Working with the right partners is vital to achieve good outcomes.
Several years ago the Merri Health Board identified the need for GP services to complement existing community health services. It had been about 25 years since the service last had a general practice clinic. Merri Health contacted Larter to seek advice on options. With a decision eventually made to acquire an existing local practice, Merri Health tasked the Larter team with providing the support necessary to transition ownership of the general practice in four months. Our team supported: ☛ building the skills and capabilities needed to open and run the service in a sustainable way ☛ negotiating all employee agreements with doctors, nurses and administrative staff ☛ supporting accreditation and quality reviews ☛ developing the appropriate funding model, related IT and payment services ☛ communication and change management. GPs are already in high demand from existing community health patients, and efforts are underway for further growth.
