We were delighted that My Moves Matter was selected as 1 of the 11 winners for Health Innovation Hub Ireland first Femtech Innovation call competition. It is perfect timing for us as we launch today a world-first study on hormonal impact on women with Parkinson’s disease. We are collaborating with researchers at University College Cork (UCC) with a view to understanding how hormonal changes in women impact their symptoms. The study with UCC is so important for women with Parkinson’s as it will be the first prospective study of its kind to track the impact of the menstrual cycle on Parkinson’s symptoms. There are no clinical guidelines for the management of symptoms worsening in relation to hormonal changes in women. My hope is that this study may help to lay the foundations for the development of such guidelines, which would be transformative for many women who have worsening of their symptoms for 1-2 weeks of every month which can be very debilitating leading to work absences, inability to look after their families and often giving up work. Professor Aideen Sullivan, Head of Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience and lead researcher on the study said: “There is increasing global awareness of the unmet need for patient-specific treatment and management of Parkinson’s disease. This is particularly important for women with Parkinson’s, who have unique needs. Women may experience Parkinson’s symptoms differently at distinct stages of their monthly menstrual cycle, and of their reproductive lifecycle". New research in the International Urogynecology Journal Journal raises serious concerns about testosterone use among trans-identified female patients. Researchers found that: ✔️ 94% of the patients they studied had developed pelvic floor dysfunction ✔️ 87% suffered from issues with bladder control ✔️ 53% reported sexual dysfunction, such as pain during intercourse ✔️ 74% reported experiencing issues with bowel movements, such as constipation or faecal incontinence. There’s a serious disconnect between emerging evidence of transition’s risks and harms, and the ways young people view these interventions. Read more in UnHerd:

They say that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In aggregate, that's true, and demonstrates very nicely the overall mission of public health. In some cases though, the value of prevention is so high relative to that of cure that, rather like dividing by zero, the ratio is incalculable. In such situations, even one case of illness represents a failure of the system. Congenital syphilis (CS), the infection of an infant by an improperly or untreated mother is one such case. Cooper and Sanchez, in Seminars in Perinatology, say that EVERY case of congenital syphilis is a failure of the public health system. That's because with adequate prenatal testing, up to three tests recommended for at-risk pregnant women, and adequate treatment--injections of bicillin, no infant should have to face the crippling and even deadly consequences of CS. Children born with CS face crippling physical deformity, developmental disability, palsy, blindness, and even death. While they can be treated and cured of syphilis, its effects are often lifelong. The inadequacy of prenatal care in the United States compared to other developed nations is well documented on many fronts. In the face of a rapidly swelling epidemic of syphilis among women aged 15-44 nationwide, however, it is specifically performing inadequately to prevent CS. Across the nation, cases rose 754% between 2012 and 2021, and continue to rise sharply, with 3,755 cases reported in 2022, or 102.5 per 100,000 live births. Among the most vulnerable populations, such as Alaskan Indian/American Indians, the number approaches a staggering 1 out of every 100 live births. Every one of those cases is somebody's precious child, and each case is ultimately preventable with a greater, awareness, effort, and investment in prenatal care. Easier said than done, I know, but we must start somewhere. Prevention is possible, can be relatively painless, and can work every time. In the past, some people have avoided a potentially life-saving cervical screening test with a doctor because they had suffered sexual violence or trauma, had cultural objections, or had a bad experience with a test in the past. About 70 per cent of the 800 women diagnosed with cervical cancer in Australia annually have never undergone a cervical screening test or were overdue for one, according to the federal Health Department. From 2018 to 2020, the participation rate for cervical screening was 68 per cent, according to preliminary data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Before July 2022, self-collected cervical screening tests were available to only a limited number of people. However, Professor Marion Saville, executive director of the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer, said technology advancements had made it possible to offer a self-test to anyone eligible for screening, as such tests are now just as accurate as those done by a doctor.
