A partnership led by the government of Mongolia and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has raised $198 million in commitments towards conservation and sustainable communities, with similar initiatives in up to 20 other countries in the pipeline. Eternal Mongolia aims to create 14 mln hectares of new protected areas in the country’s grasslands, forests, deserts, wetlands, and rivers through a Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) initiative that includes $71 mln from private and philanthropic donors. It will strengthen the management of the country’s existing National Protected Areas, covering 47 mln ha, and benefit at least 24,000 households in community-managed practices like sustainable grazing across a further 34 mln ha. “The scale of impact this Eternal Mongolia initiative has is, frankly, quite transformative. It will be the largest land and freshwater conservation initiative that TNC has ever been engaged in across our 75-year history,” Ryan Demmy Bidwell, global director of PFP at TNC, told our reporter Thomas Cox. It’s a big day at Aviva Canada as we, in partnership with WWF-Canada, proudly launch the Business and Biodiversity Action Plan. 🌳📘 Our economy is dependent on nature, with at least half of the world’s wealth being moderately or highly dependent on thriving ecosystems. Yet the rapid decline of wildlife populations by 69% in the last 50 years is a stark reminder of the urgent need for action. Every Canadian business, across all industries, plays a pivotal role in this mission. Our Action Plan, offered as a free resource, outlines pragmatic steps towards fostering a healthier natural world and driving sustainable economic growth. 🌎 This journey is more than conservation; it's about transforming into an organization that positively impacts nature. ➡️ Read the full Action Plan here: wwf.ca/actionplan ➡️ Discover more about the initiative: https://lnkd.in/enrsykXx

🌳 Don't miss the forest for the trees—but what about the birds, bugs, and shrubs? All of these lifeforms are essential for forest longevity and regeneration. 🦅 This National Bird Day 2024, ARC features this pair of writhed hornbills whose role in seed dispersal drives forest development: two seemingly small parts of the whole ecosystem whose well-being is inextricably linked with the forest and the ecosystem as a whole. ❗Writhed hornbills are considered near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to habitat loss. Restoration projects initiated by ARC are designed to create habitat for threatened wildlife like the Writhed hornbill. 💚ARC considers the forest, and its trees, birds, and bugs—seeing the forest for its parts and as a whole in order to restore the environment. 🌍 On this #WorldEnvironmentDay, we celebrate a decade of #rewilding in the Southern Carpathians with news of the arrival of two new bison herds in Romania! 🦬🌳 Bison reintroduction efforts in the Southern Carpathians began 10 years ago. Between 2014 and 2023, Rewilding Europe and WWF-Romania translocated 99 European bison to the Țarcu Mountains – a part of the Southern Carpathians rewilding landscape where no wild bison had roamed free for at least 250 years. With the population in the landscape now thriving, it currently comprises at least 190 individuals, including the newly arrived groups of #EuropeanBison totalling 14 animals. The two new bison groups represent the first release carried out under the LIFE with Bison initiative, which is taking bison rewilding efforts in the Southern Carpathians to the next level with support from the EU's LIFE Programme. Together, Rewilding Romania, WWF-Romania, and a range of partners including local municipalities will ensure that the growing European bison population and people who live in the landscape can live alongside each other in a balanced and positive way, and that local communities continue to benefit financially from the return of this iconic species, through the area’s burgeoning nature-based economy. Discover more 👉 https://loom.ly/nFp7zwA Rewilding Europe is providing co-funding, thanks to financial support from a range of partners, including Cartier for Nature, Fondation Ensemble, The Ecological Restoration Fund, the Nationale Postcode Loterij, Wereld Natuur Fonds (WWF-NL), and Arcadia. The support of these partners plays a critical role in enabling us to deliver and scale up rewilding impact.

Rest is a crucial part of life and if productivity must be maintained, rest must be included in our schedule. Some of our feathered friends are losing their place of rest to anthropogenic activities. Let’s Spotlight on the Majestic Secretarybird one of endangered species in Africa. In the sun-drenched savannas of Africa, a striking figure strides across the grasslands, its quirky quills and powerful physique making it a sight to behold. But despite its impressive appearance, the Secretarybird (Sagittarius serpentarius) is facing a silent crisis, its numbers dwindling at an alarming rate. Found in the grasslands and open plains of sub-Saharan Africa, the Secretarybird is a critically endangered species, with estimates suggesting that only 6,700 individuals remain in the wild. Habitat destruction, human-wildlife conflict, and poisoning have all contributed to the decline of this magnificent bird, which plays a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem's balance. It's time to take action! We must work together to protect the Secretarybird and its habitat. Join the Fight to Save the Secretarybird! Join Green-for-Life Initiative to create a save environment for these birds and other endangered species. https://lnkd.in/dfUWBNSy #TreePlanting #Green-for-LifeInitiative #NGO #Treeplanting #BirdConservation #protectourplanet #eco-friendly #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalAwareness #WildlifeMatters #Sustainability #SustainableLiving #ConservationConnects #BirdLove #WildlifeConservation #EcosystemHeroes #BirdProtection #Sustainability #NatureLovers #BirdLovers #Sustainability #CommunityFirst #Greenify #Volunteer #Donate #SpreadTheWord

A recent SWIO regional policy review conducted by WWF has found that countries have developed national policies to provide communities with rights and benefits in natural resource management, including mangroves. However, realising these rights and benefits faces several challenges, including tensions arising from duplicate or ambiguous policies, limited institutional and financial capacity to support policy intentions and a lack of coordinated support to expand and sustain community-based mangrove management. Conservation that is #communityled is a cornerstone of WWF-SWIO’s work in #SWIO. Although having these policies in place provides us with a springboard to reach our 2030 goal of 20 million hectares of community-managed area, we first need to address the obstacles to realising community rights and benefits in mangrove management. As such, WWF has provided several recommendations to navigate and improve the policy landscape for strengthened community rights and benefits in mangrove management. These recommendations include developing and finalising a regional mangrove strategy and action plan that addresses policy pitfalls, clarifies the concept of community rights in mangrove management and supports national mangrove management strategies. Find out about SWIO’s work regarding community-led conservation here: https://lnkd.in/d9uc_SjT

👏Well done to our #seedsofchange participants Wild Inishowen Club and Inishowen Beekeeper's Association who collaborated to deliver an informative talk about Garden Ponds for Wildlife, hosted at The Exchange Inishowen last night. Approximately 40 local people turned out to hear George Mc Dermott and Colm Grant deliver an informative talk with lots of examples of different types of ponds 💦and the variety of wildlife they attract. Also, good advice was offered on how to create your pond and the equipment ⛏needed with some live examples of the types of plants that can be grown in ponds. There was an important section on invasive species (both plants and animals) that can be damaging to #biodiversity and should be avoided. The next step is to do a Field Trip later in the Spring to visit different local ponds so be sure to look out for that. We at Inishowen Development Partnership are delighted to support this great work through our ChangeMakers Donegal Seeds of Change🌱Funding and Mentoring Programme. 🌏Together we can explore and imagine solutions for a better world. 🐸 By taking action at a local level, these community groups are supporting @theglobal goals; #SDG4 Quality Education, #SDG11 Sustainable Communities, #SDG13 Climate, #SDG14 Life Below Water, #SDG15 Life on Land, #SDG17 Partnership for the Goals. #sustainability #donegal #inishowen #change #changemakers #seedsofchange #sustainabilitypassport #local #community #collaboration #biodiversity #localaction
