Policy and Programme manager, global network, EU's external action, Environment, Climate, Water Diplomacy,
Wetland Partnerships can be a means for the EU and its member states to support the implementation of the Freshwater Challenge and alignment of global conventions at the national level, while delivering results for #wetlands.
We will be at #ClimateWeekNYC, raising the profile of The Freshwater Challenge, the largest global initiative to restore and protect rivers and wetlands. Water is one of the hardest hit natural resources of #climatechange and wetlands provide nearly all of the world's freshwater. Healthy wetlands are a premium #naturebasedsolution. What we need is action. #WeNeedWetlands WWF The Nature Conservancy IUCN BirdLife International Convention on Wetlands

JUST RELEASED: The Strategic Plan for Hawai‘i Wetlands 2024 We are delighted to announce the launch of the Pacific Birds’ Strategic Plan for Hawai‘i Wetlands 2024. The goal of the plan is to guide the effective protection, restoration, and management of wetlands for the benefit of Threatened and Endangered (T&E) waterbirds, migratory shorebirds and waterfowl, human communities, ecosystems, and climate resilience in Hawai‘i. The plan prioritizes wetland sites and conservation actions to improve habitats for waterbirds and people in Hawaiʻi. It includes an appendix with detailed site narratives on wetlands sites across the State. It will guide Pacific Birds’ work and help our partners to prioritize actions at both a State and a local level.

Let's protect our wetlands! 🌎 Wetlands are vital ecosystems that provide us with clean water, protect us from floods, and support a remarkable diversity of life. On #WorldWetlandsDay, let's join forces to safeguard these precious natural treasures. 🌱 The Netherlands is a nation deeply connected to water, and committed to protecting wetlands both at home and abroad. 🌍 What are we doing? We're pioneering innovative restoration projects like the Oostvaardersplassen, a vast wetland area where nature has been allowed to thrive, now home to a diverse range of wildlife. We're also working hard to restore peatlands, which are natural carbon sinks that play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. Through our Netherlands Peatland Restoration Programme, we aim to restore 200,000 hectares of peatlands by 2030. Our commitment to protecting these precious habitats also extends to the Dutch Caribbean, where we're partnering with local parties to safeguard their mangrove forests. Mangroves form intricate networks in Bonaire's wetlands, providing essential protection from storm surges and erosion. We aim to help restore these mangroves, ensuring their resilience and the well-being of the island's biodiversity. And back on the continent, we're dedicated to protecting our UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Dutch Wadden Sea. This remarkable ecosystem is home to seals, dolphins, and a wealth of seabirds. We're committed to preserving the Wadden Sea's unique biodiversity and ensuring its continued health for future generations. Let's join hands to protect these vital wetlands for the benefit of all. Together, we can make a positive impact for our planet. 🌎 #FarmingtheFuture #SolvingGlobalChallenges #WorldWetlandsDay

Today, February 2nd is Wetlands Day. So what are Wetlands and why are they important? Up to us to educate ourselves. Here a 2 min brief. On 30 August 2021 the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 75/317 that established 2 February as World Wetlands Day. According to the World Wetlands Day website: "Wetlands are land areas that are saturated or flooded with water either permanently or seasonally. Inland wetlands: Marshes, lakes, rivers, floodplains, peatlands and swamps Coastal wetlands: Saltwater marshes, estuaries, mangroves, lagoons and coral reefs Human-made wetlands: Fish ponds, rice paddies and salt pans" They are very important for biodiversity, flood and erosion control, to name a few benefits, part of this ecosystem we all share. https://lnkd.in/gMUUvzza

🌳 Visit the Atlantic Forest! Atlantic Forest Day, celebrated on May 27th in Brazil, is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance and conservation of one of the world's most biodiverse and threatened ecosystems. Spanning Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, this the Atlantic Rainforest is home to a rich array of plant and animal species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. The day emphasizes the critical role the forest plays in maintaining ecological balance, supporting indigenous communities, and providing essential resources such as clean water and air. According to MapBiomas, in the last 40 years, Brazil has lost more than 9.8 million hectares of primary Atlantic Forest. Deforestation, urbanization, and climate change are the main threats to the biome. Atlantic Forest Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the efforts of those working tirelessly to protect and restore the forest. Visiting the biome can be one way to show your support up close. #atlasadventuretravel #atlanticforestday #atlanticforest #visitlatinamerica #southamerica #responsibletourism
