The @GlobalRefugeeForum2023 is scheduled to be held from 13th to 15th December in Geneva UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency The GlobalCompactOnRefugees is rooted in principles of humanity and international solidarity. It aims to put into action the principles of burden-and responsibility-sharing to enhance the protection and assistance provided to refugees, as well as to support host countries and communities. This compact aligns with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and is based on the fundamental principle of non-refoulement as outlined in the 1951 Convention and its 1967 Protocol. The global compact sets out four main objectives: to alleviate the burden on host countries, to promote self-reliance among refugees, to increase opportunities for settlement in third countries, and to support conditions in countries of origin for safe and dignified returns. #UNCharter #1951RefugeeConvention #1967Protocol #NonRefoulement #GlobalCompact #GlobalRefugeeForum #unhcrsouthernafrica

it's important to convey that forced displacement crises are important not only when they happen in rich countries. Sadly, the majority of crises with marked forced displacement components take place in middle- to low-income countries, where resources are overstreched and the capacity to respond is much smaller. Forced displacement is a global issue that requires global, multistakeholder responses.
Refugees are a global challenge which requires a global response, says Filippo Grandi. The World Economic Forum's Refugee Employment Alliance is working towards accelerating multistakeholder support for the economic integration of refugees globally. Great launch of MOPAN's assessment of UNHCR on 9 February at the Palais des nations in Geneva, with a full room of country delegations who had read the report and had good questions to ask. Headline: UNHCR has gone through a huge change process and come out stronger as a result - but now is the time to consolidate and reap benefits of the reforms. Read the report summary here: https://lnkd.in/ejGsmBeg The longer report and the very much longer Annex A - the evidence summary across all MOPAN's key performance indicators - can be accessed from here: https://lnkd.in/eCDDN_SY

Conflicts, persecution and global challenges such as #climatechange continue to force people from their homes. This makes the work of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency so necessary and so important. #MOPAN recently launched our assessment of #UNHCR and found that UNHCR's mandate is critical, and it takes a clear leadership role in #refugee and internal displacement situations. Yet our assessment also highlights areas to address - in order to ensure #UNHCR remains fit for the future and can support those that it serves. Global Attitudes to Refugees On World Refugee Day 2024, a new 52-country survey by Ipsos and UNHCR reveals enduring public support for refugees, with notable variations in attitudes. The survey highlights key insights: 1. High Global Support: 73% support offering refuge to those fleeing war or persecution. The Middle East, Africa, and Latin America show the highest support, with 93% in Kenya and 92% in Uganda. 2. Public Openness:Half of the respondents support refugees accessing their rights, such as education, healthcare, and jobs. Additionally, 77% support policies for family reunification in asylum countries. 3. Diverse Perspectives: In major host and Western countries, there's a mix of skepticism and support. While a third believe refugees positively contribute to the economy and culture, another third hold the opposite view, with concerns about integration, security, and public services. 4. Active Support:Despite concerns, many are taking action—one-third have supported refugees through donations or social media. However, 37% believe international aid for host countries is insufficient. The survey aims to deepen the global understanding of public attitudes towards refugees amid unprecedented levels of forced displacement, now over 120 million globally. Let's continue to support and understand the refugee experience, promoting informed and compassionate responses. #WorldRefugeeDay #HopeAwayFromHome #RefugeeSupport
A new global survey by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and Ipsos shows enduring support globally for the right to seek safety, overall understanding and compassion for refugees. Nonetheless, in some Western and major host countries, this support has declined in recent years, says Dominique Isabelle Hyde of UNHCR. Find out more ℹ https://is.gd/n4Ptuo

Stop violence everywhere! We need a fully different approach to forced migration! If people are not able to regularly cross borders they remain internally displaced and cannot apply for asylum and obtain refugee status, which currently implies that there is much less support available. The number of UNHCR relocations is 90.000 (2023), which is a fraction of the global demand. We instead need to become proactive and in order to do so, we clearly need a new refugee definition and a new approach starting at the root causes, my proposal is that a refugee is “anyone in acute or foreseeable need of refuge” and needs to be entitled to our assistance, locally or internationally, see: https://lnkd.in/drR7ZsVZ & www.pax.ngo

“Everything starts with accommodation. We heard that all the time from the refugees. Unless they know where they are going to stay, they can't focus on something else.” 🏡 On #WorldRefugeeDay, we are excited to share our new report on lessons learned from the Safe Homes project! The Safe Homes project isn't just about housing Ukrainian Refugees; it's about creating long-term connections in host communities. Safe Homes shows that solidarity can shape policies and change lives. Let’s envision a Europe where everyone, no matter where they're from, can find a home and start dreaming.
