Unconventional architecture requires unique formwork concepts, posing a challenge that we gladly accepted, with the construction of the tallest building in Germany used exclusively for residential purposes: the Grand Tower in Frankfurt am Main. 🏢 🏗️ The construction of the 180-metre high building brought with it a multitude of challenges. For example, the ambitious, diamond-shaped floor plan changes from storey to storey. Instead of repeating the layout of the flats on each floor and placing the flat entrances one above the other, the architects opted for different floor plans that alternate according to a predefined pattern. The solution provided by our formwork experts: The building core was constructed independently of the residential units with their varying floor plans. 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴 Designed by Henning Larsen the World of Volvo, is a groundbreaking #timber construction project and cultural hub which was opened in 2024. The structure’s unique #circular design, inspired by Scandinavian architectural traditions, represents connection, community, and harmony with nature. A standout feature of the 22.000 square meter project is the extensive use of #masstimber for the bearing structure, with approximately 6,000 cubic meters of glulam (glued laminated timber) and cross-laminated timber (CLT) used in its construction. This choice highlights Volvo’s commitment to sustainability, as timber significantly reduces the carbon footprint compared to conventional building materials like steel or concrete. Timber also provides aesthetic warmth and contributes to the building’s biophilic design, fostering a close relationship between architecture and the natural environment. World's Tallest Wooden Skyscaper Takes Shape in Milwaukee. For the second time this decade Milewaukee will host of the world's tallest timber skycraper. At a height of 182.88m/ 600ft, the as yet unnamed 55 story tower will be part of the "Marcus Performing Arts Center renovations and overseen by MGA | Michael Green Architecture." The previous tallest wooden tower was the 25 story Ascent Tower. For the new building, "MGA will rely on much stronger options like glulam (a type laminated timber) and cross-laminated timber (CLT) that are specifically designed to withstand stress, moisture, and other environmental pressures." Housing 750 housing units, 300 hotel rooms, retail space and parking, the timber building will have a better environmental footprint than steel and concrete and be more fire resistant than modern alternatives. As timber specialists, we often collaborate with architectural firms in both consulting and subcontracting roles. We've heard from architects that they sometimes struggle with integrating mass timber instead of traditional materials like steel and concrete, due to challenges in finding measurable specifications. Often, timber is used as an aesthetic afterthought to wrap columns or incorporate box beams, which unnecessarily doubles the cost of materials and labor. Similarly, traditional stick-framed buildings may include additional faux trusses, again increasing resource and labor costs. Many view timber as a premium option but overlook the significant cost savings it can bring to a project's final budget. If this resonates with you, we should talk!

This is a building that really should be monitored - with a comprehensive set of questions framed around various key aspects- then shared - for us to all learn from. Will it? - Weathering and longevity of the external timber elements (the article mentioned the specific buildup, but doesn't talk about weathering and longevity specifically) - fire spread of course, although this looks like it has been carefully assessed - proper Lifetime carbon calculation - how effective is the natural ventilation approach over time - Energy consumption, specifically space heat consumption Else, if we don't learn, this is no more than an icon

Principal Donald Schmitt is speaking at the 2025 Ottawa Wood Solutions Conference on Wednesday, February 5, at 1pm EST, where he will be presenting the firm’s rejuvenation of the National Arts Centre | Centre national des Arts in Ottawa. In his talk Prefabrication Makes Perfect: Design and Manufacturing Excellence Converge in the National Arts Centre’s Revitalization, Don will discuss the transformative rejuvenation and expansion of the National Arts Centre (NAC) in Ottawa, with a focus on the prefabricated timber structure that has been integrated in the existing building — a tessellated roof composed of triangular wood coffers that is sympathetic to the original Brutalist concrete aesthetic — while infusing the space with natural warmth.   Don will share how the prefabrication of these wood elements ensured precision and quality, while expediting on-site assembly and minimizing construction disruptions. His talk will explore how this innovative use of timber not only transformed the NAC’s architecture but also underscores a commitment to sustainable building practices. What’s the secret to designing a parking structure in challenging environments? The Emery Station West V Garage in Emeryville, CA, demonstrates effective problem-solving. Our five-story post-tension concrete design incorporates a hybrid moment frame and shear wall system. To tackle high water table issues, GPLA has implemented an extended mat foundation that avoids deep piles, keeping costs manageable. Additionally, we’re incorporating a bioretention swale with decorative plants for enhanced aesthetics. New world's tallest timber skyscraper planned for the USA. The timber tower will consist of 55 floors, making it the tallest mass timber skyscraper in the world. This remarkably ambitious proposal in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, looks set to take timber to new heights. Designed by MGA | Michael Green Architecture, a leader in modern timber construction, this project will become the world's tallest timber skyscraper once complete. While the exact height of the skyscraper is yet to be confirmed, it is expected to surpass the current tallest all-timber building, the 85.4 meters (280 ft) Mjøstårnet in Norway. Given the height, it's likely that some concrete reinforcement will be incorporated for stability. Many people get concerned at the thought of a wooden skyscraper, imagining it will be some sort of tinderbox that will ignite with a misplaced cigarette or kitchen fire. However, modern mass timber (such as glulam and cross-laminated timber) isn't like traditional lumber. Instead, it's manufactured in factories and consists of many layers of wood glued together to form a much stronger wooden beam that can even perform better in fire than steel due to the way it chars rather than fully igniting.
