May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. How are you celebrating our AAPI neighbors, family members, colleagues and community members this month (and all year)? Three recommendations: 1. Check out the work of the The Asian Community Fund at the Boston Foundation and follow my colleague, Danielle Kim. 2. Read the current issue of Boston Spirit Magazine and specifically the article on community funds in support of the LGBTQ+ community, including a new fund launched in the Merrimack Value thanks to Julie Chen & Susu Wong. 3. Finally, read this piece that came out last year that centers LGBTQ+ mental health and the AAPI experience.

Indigenous members of LGBTQ+ community experience markedly high rates of anxiety (77%) and depression (65%) as young adults, according to The Trevor Project. Informed, inclusive and affirming care is one of the best tools we have to help. When you feel seen and safe, it is easier to practice trust and vulnerability with a provider. But finding that level of care isn't always easy. Our goal is to change that. ⭐ February marks a hugely important month for two reasons: it is Black History Month (USA), and LGBTQ+ History Month. These two converging months represent the chance to listen and learn, how to make the workplace more accepting, and how to ensure that it is not a place of micro-aggressions. When a child transitions their gender, parents also undergo an emotional metamorphosis. Many of these parents experience significant emotional distress, secondary stigma related to trans negativity, and feel reluctant to seek support outside their immediate family due to fear of rejection. These negative psychological states are problematic due to the fact that no matter the age of the Trans*/NB loved one, parental support is one of the most important protective factors reducing risks of depression, anxiety, substance use and suicide. This policy brief highlights how recent changes in LGBTQ+ healthcare legislation across states particularly impact Black LGBTQ+ communities, necessitating urgent advocacy for policies that safeguard their rights and ensure equitable access to healthcare.
