Now, decompressing after #Japan busy weeks...! Something that I heard last week in one of the three world-class #japanese #space **𝗡𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗶z𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗼𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿** We all need to realize that Space is a very powerful tool, first for #preventing and second to #monitor these catastrophes on #Earth through many of satellite applications out there. At this point, also we all agree on the need of #sustainability on space, but what are really the measurements taken? Thank you to Secure World Foundation for organizing a great Space Sustainability Summit. Sustainability is crucial for the space industry's success and public acceptance, offering both immediate and long-term benefits. The Overview Effect, experienced by space travelers, fosters ecological awareness, potentially increasing commitment to Earth's sustainability, akin to the Apollo era's impact. Large-Scale Space Migration could alleviate Earth's population and industrial pressures, while satellites contribute to communications, disaster recovery, and environmental monitoring. The International Space Station's experiments suggest advancements in materials and medicines, and space-based solar power shows promise. Economic growth may be driven by space tourism, a cislunar economy, and future asteroid mining. However, these benefits must be balanced against ecological risks, such as space debris. This edition of A Bridge to the Future focuses on making rocket fuels more sustainable. Follow us for more reports. #SpaceTech #AerospaceEngineering #CommercialSpace #SpaceStartups #SpaceInvestment

On Thursday, July 25, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) will host a seminar titled "Space x SDGs - Introducing Space-derived Solutions for Solving Challenges." (in Japanese) What comes to mind when you hear "Space x SDGs"? You might wonder how space explorations like rocket launches and Hayabusa mission relate to environmental issues such as CO2 reduction. Drawing from my experience as the former Sustainability Officer at Yokogawa, as well as establishing space organization, I will explain how technologies and solutions developed in space can help solve challenges on Earth. In this seminar, I will first introduce the "New Space Revolution" led by private space companies like Elon Musk's SpaceX and explain "Space x SDGs," which create new values beyond Earth by utilizing space. Following this, I will delve into specific examples of solutions that contribute to solving challenges on Earth. This seminar is valuable for those looking for new solutions to SDGs, those interested in space and aiming for commercialization, and those wanting to know how space can benefit our daily lives. Join us for this valuable opportunity and experience how the latest space technologies can change the future of our planet. We look forward to your participation! #Space #SDGs #Sustainability #JPI #ProblemSolving https://lnkd.in/gEtNbee6

* I recently attended a concert in Hong Kong entitled 「星辰大海」, which translates to “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗼𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀” It is apparently the title of a TV drama (and a pop song) in mainland China. The phrase is used in popular culture to depict individuals with grand ambitions and far-reaching goals. It encourages and inspires young people to bravely pursue higher goals and broader horizons. Inspired by this, let us explore the connection between the Cosmos and the Seas. The key word to connect the two is #Sustainability. 🚀 At OASA, we are interested in what needs to be done to ensure that our planet stays healthy— both in (outer)space and in the high seas. It is crucial to maintain the integrity of the Earth’s orbits (where satellites operate) and our oceans for a sustainable future. 。𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗜𝗻 𝗢𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿: With the surge in the number of low Earth orbiting satellites being launched, it is vital to maintain the orbital environment in good order. If we don’t manage space debris responsibly, we risk scenarios like the 𝗞𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲. This phenomenon occurs when space junk collisions create a cascade of further collisions, generating more debris. Such a scenario could disrupt the operation of #satellites that support navigation and connectivity, 𝘱𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 impacting the safety of ships (and everything else). 。𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀: Our oceans provide resources and help regulate the climate. Maritime shipping relies heavily on satellite-based technology for navigation, weather monitoring, and operational efficiency. 🌍 In addition, satellites play a key role in environmental monitoring, such as tracking the 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵. 1. Advancing Technology: Let’s focus on developing new technologies and solutions to tackle space debris and ocean pollution. This includes using advanced materials and deploying autonomous cleanup systems to protect these vital environments. 2. Establishing Regulatory Frameworks: Formulating comprehensive international protocols is essential to promote sustainable practices in both space exploration and marine activities. These guidelines ensure environmental preservation while exploring the vast expanses of the cosmos. 3. Promoting Awareness: Raising public awareness about the importance of preserving both the Cosmos and the Seas. By highlighting the intricate interdependence of these ecosystems, we can encourage collective action towards positive change. By understanding the #challenges and opportunities within space and marine domains, we can create strategic initiatives that uphold the integrity of these realms. This integrative approach not only benefits our planet now but also paves the way for a sustainable legacy for future generations. Let’s work together to protect the Cosmos and the Seas! 🌟🌊 #Sustainability #Space #Oceans #Innovation #ClimateChange #OASA

What an amazingly interesting couple of days at the #EU #Space Forum 😁 Did you miss Kristina Nikolaus' panel discussion on greening space technologies? Fear not here are 4 key points👇 🌱 Ensuring that space remains accessible for future generations is our shared responsibility. #NewSpace has caused a race for technology, launches, funding, and regulations, but the most crucial race is ensuring the #sustainability of the space environment. 🔎 We must focus on #debrismitigation, #collisionavoidance, respect for dark and quiet skies, and effective #deorbiting & #reentry strategies from the earliest design stages. 🛰️🚀 Coordination in space, like in aviation, is non-negotiable. We must shift to active Space Traffic Management through data sharing, standard protocols, interoperability, and automation. 👉 Upcoming challenge? High-accuracy data. The path forward is complex, but global efforts are converging towards a sustainable space future. Let's continue to work together for a better tomorrow. Thank you Stella Tkatchova, Andrew Williams, Michael Cheng and Mariella Graziano for this great discussion. ✌️
