Nice piece about the challenges LGBTQI+ people face in the workplace, and what you can do to change it. There are a couple that jump out at me which may not be so obvious to many of us, I've given an alternative option for each: 💥 Assumptions about sexuality when talking about personal lives... 🏳️🌈 When chatting about personal stuff and partners, unless you know for certain, don't assume the gender of the person's partner (he/she/husband/wife etc.) 💥Using pronouns without checking 🏳️🌈 Get into the habit of asking people what their preferred pronoun is. When you do this, it demonstrates kindness and understanding to everyone, even if 90% of them use a pronoun you might have already guessed at. Did you know it’s #AromanticAwarenessWeek? 💚🖤🤍 Aromantic identities are still poorly understood and rarely acknowledged within the wider LGBTQIA+ community. People on the aromantic spectrum experience little or no romantic attraction to others, but they may still experience sexual or aesthetic attraction. People who are aromantic and asexual may refer to themselves as “acearo”. 💭 Being aro doesn’t mean you can’t have meaningful, fulfilling relationships. How can we support the LGBTQIA+ people in our lives? Many queer, trans and intersex people will face discrimination or isolation that can impact their mental health. But having support and acceptance from the people around them can have a huge impact. Here are some suggestions from Mind on how you can help: 🌈 Accept them for who they are Always lead with kindness and respect their identity - they know themselves better than you do! Use the terms they prefer to describe themselves. If you're not sure what pronouns to use, just ask. 📖 Learn about LGBTQIA+ issues There are plenty of resources available to help you educate yourself, especially during Pride month. Brush up on your LGBTQIA+ history. Seek out queer, trans and intersex voices online and listen to their experiences. Dive into a TV show, book or comic by LGBTQIA+ creators. 📢 Challenge discrimination and stigma If you notice something that may not be fair or inclusive, speak up. This also means recognising and working through your own biases. It's our shared responsibility to create an environment where LGBTQIA+ people are safe and respected. Here's a step-by-step guide to help parents navigate this journey with compassion and understanding. 1. Find a Quiet Space
The first step is finding a quiet space to process your thoughts and emotions. This space should allow you to focus inwardly and gather your reflections. 2. Take Deep Breaths
Take deep breaths to calm your mind and body, reducing stress and anxiety. It's a simple yet powerful way to center yourself. 3. Allow Yourself to Experience All Reactions
It's natural to experience a wide range of emotions. Allow yourself to feel everything without judgment. These reactions are valid and part of the human experience. 4. Affirm Your Love and Support
Remember that your child's identity reflects not your parenting but a unique aspect of who they are. Your unconditional love and support are the most important gifts you can offer. 5. Be Patient
Understanding and accepting a child's evolving identity takes time. Be patient with yourself and your child. Seek support from friends, support groups, or professional counselors as needed. Embracing the Journey
As parents, each step we take in understanding and accepting our children is a testament to our enduring love. Following these steps can create a supportive environment for your child to explore and develop their authentic self. Remember, you are not alone in this journey. Queer Eye is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to teaching us about self-love, acceptance, and becoming the best versions of ourselves ❤️ And it’s safe to say that they have also taught us some important lessons that we can take into our everyday life. Some of those lessons are: 👉 Don’t forget to make yourself a priority 👉 Never be afraid of telling people how you feel 👉 It’s never a bad thing to ask for help and support 👉 Don’t let the past or previous experiences to hold you back from your future 👉 Face the world head-on, don’t hide away from it There are so many important lessons that we have learnt from the series, so it was difficult for us to narrow them down! Supporting someone who confides in you about their queer identity is crucial for their well-being. Here’s how you can be a supportive ally: 1. Listen Empathetically: Be a compassionate listener. Let them share their experiences and feelings without judgment or interruption. 2. Respect Their Identity: Use their chosen name and pronouns. Respect their privacy and never out them without their consent. 3. Educate Yourself: Learn about LGBTQIA+ issues, terminology, and history to better understand their experiences. 4. Mind Your Language: Avoid offensive language and slurs. Be mindful of the words you use and their impact. 5. Stand Up Against Discrimination: Challenge discriminatory behavior when you encounter it. Be an ally publicly, opposing prejudice and discrimination. 6. Provide a Safe Space: Offer a safe environment where they can be themselves without fear. Create an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding. 7. Support Their Mental Health: Be aware of the higher mental health risks.
