A University of Washington study found LGBTQ+ Asian Americans are considered more American than heterosexual Asian Americans. Participants were asked to categorize people on a 7-point scale on questions like, "How fluently do you think this person speaks English?" and “How integrated is this person in American culture?” The study found that white participants were perceived as American regardless of their sexual orientation. This reinforces research illustrating the problem of white Americans being perceived as "more American" than people of color. Having a queer identity may make an Asian American seem less foreign, but they also face unique challenges due to their intersectional experience. Many will experience racism in their ethnic communities and racism in the LGBTQ+ community. As we celebrate Pride Month, it's important to celebrate and support LGBTQ+ community members from all walks of life.

When coming out to family, Asian Americans tend to face some common cultural challenges, but initially negative reactions can change over time. LGBTQ+ Asian Americans have to overcome the pressures of filial piety, familial honor, and what their extended family (especially non-U.S.) will think. Immigrant parents in particular, may come from environments without much information about the LGBTQ+ community. Language and religious barriers can make this harder, as they may share a common vocabulary to talk about this in the same language. Shame, guilt, confusion and fear are common emotions Asian Americans have when their children come out. They fear the way that their children will face discrimination and hardship fro their LGBTQ+ identity. They may also mistakenly believe it is a phase caused by: 1) Moving to or being raised in the U.S. 2) Being disconnected from their culture 3) Attending U.S. schools 4) Living in cities with LGBTQ+ populations 5) Having LGBTQ+ friends Many resources exist online to help families navigate this issue. Sometimes the help of a trained professional can help navigate the Coming Out Continuum (Denial -> Opposition -> Tolerance -> Recognition -> Understanding -> Acceptance -> Celebration). This Pride Month, take some time to reflect on the diverse populations that make up the LGTBQ+ community.

"Love demands expression. It will not stay still, stay silent, be good, be modest, be seen and not heard, no. It will break out in tongues of praise, the high note that smashes the glass and spills the liquid." - Jeanette Winterson Pride Month is about unity and collective action. It's about standing together against bigotry, hate, and intolerance. It's about recognizing and recommitting to our shared humanity and ACTIVELY working towards a future where everyone - regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation - can live freely and authentically. At Change Agent, our commitment to inclusion takes a few forms: • Our team has strong LGBTQ+ representation • We constantly train Change Agent’s language model to address LGBTQ+ concerns and use inclusive language. • Change Agent is trained to use gender-neutral language wherever possible • We prioritize training data that highlights the experiences and contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals In short, Change Agent is proud that we offer generative AI that’s trained to fight for equality and social justice for the LGBTQ+ community. As Marsha P. Johnson said, "No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us." Happy Pride! 🌈 #PrideMonth #LoveIsLove

This Juneteenth, we recognize that Black and BIPOC LGBTQ+ young people carry an unfair burden of having to explain their identities. These difficult conversations often force Black queer and trans youth to have hard discussions on race, queer identities, or the intersection of both. We know that intersectional conversations can take a variety of forms. Some are engaging white friends for the first time about how being BIPOC impacts their experience in LGBTQ+ spaces, while others are opening up about the nuances of their queer experiences in BIPOC communities. For folks who hold multiple marginalized identities, it can sometimes feel overwhelming to explore the layers of these conversations with others — especially those whose lived experiences are different. We created this guide “Black & LGBTQ+: Approaching Intersectional Conversations” as a resource for folks looking to expand their conversations and have meaningful dialogues about race and identity. Check out the full guide below ⬇️🧡 https://lnkd.in/gXwuRxJR #Juneteenth #TrevorProject #LGBTQ #Solidarity #Intersectionality

Today is National Coming Out Day. Observed on October 11 each year, the day holds significant cultural and historical importance in the LGBTQ+ community. Established in 1988, this day commemorates the anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, where hundreds of thousands gathered in the Capitol city to advocate for LGBTQ+ freedom. For LGBTQ+ people, coming out is a deeply personal decision, often filled with both fear and hope. Naming your truth can be deeply spiritual. National Coming Out Day encourages those who identify as LGBTQ+ to share their identities, and asks supporting allies to stand in solidarity. This act of openness can inspire others to embrace their true selves and contribute to a more accepting society. National Coming Out Day also highlights the importance of allyship. Allies play a crucial role in creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals, fostering an environment where everyone can express their true selves without fear of retribution or discrimination. The support of allies can be transformative, helping to normalize LGBTQ+ identities and championing equality. At St. Michael’s, we have a long history of embracing people across the spectra of gender and sexual diversity. We do so not in spite of our faith, but because of it. We believe God made each of us in God’s image. The more we can embrace diversity the more fully we can see the beauty of God. Read more in this week's eNoticias: https://lnkd.in/ggX3TrSH

February is LGBTQ+ History Month in the UK, a time to reflect on the rich history and contributions of LGBTQ+ communities. Did you know that Indigenous Elders taught us about the Two Spirited peoples and their language history? Even their simplest language had five words for gender, not just the binary male or female. This recognition of non-binary identities was a part of their culture as early as 8,000 BCE. This month, let's honour and celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community, and continue to learn from and support each other. If you're interested in learning more about LGBTQ+ history, including the Two Spirited people, Egyptian Pharaohs, Roman Emperors, or Ancient Vikings. Even remembering Compton's Cafe in the 1960’s five years before the Stonewall Riots to the modern day intersex movement, feel free to contact Cynthia Fortlage at cynthiafortlage@cynthiafortlage.com to discuss your organisational educational needs. #LGBTQHistoryMonth #TwoSpirits #GenderDiversity

91% of non-LGBTQ Americans agree that LGBTQ people should have the freedom to live their life and not be discriminated against. So, why are we still fighting for equity and justice for the LGBTQ community? According to a 2023 study by GLAAD, 55% of non-LGBTQ Americans do not understand the dimensions of the LGBTQ community or how to describe individuals within it, and 66% believe the false claim that the LGBTQ community is one group with similar needs and issues. 👉 On June 26, we're exploring this disconnect and what you can do this Pride Month — and throughout the year — to support deeper understanding and intersectional allyship: https://lnkd.in/eDUhqr7J Join us and our panel of experts, who you can learn more about below, in a virtual session titled "Pride for Past, Present, and the Future" on June 26, 2-3:30pm ET. We're here. We're queer. We're not going anywhere. Efforts to roll back LGBTQ+ rights and visibility not only hurt our community, but all marginalized communities. From a societal standpoint, this is unconscionable. From an economic standpoint, it's simply stupid and bad business. According to this article, companies are - and should - be standing strong in their DEI efforts, not buckling to political pressure. If it's true, that's good. The authors note that "rainbow capitalism" has a positive effect, which may be true in terms of more diverse hiring practices. I'm a bit uncomfortable with that term, though, as I would argue that "rainbow capitalism" connotes performative allyship - even the Wikipedia link that the article references states as such. As we head into Pride month, it's important to be aware of which companies are standing strong in their commitments to the LGBTQ+ community, how they are doing so, and which are not. #lgbtqia+ #lgbtq+ #dei
