Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending Bright Network’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging event. The speakers and panellists shared their experiences and insights, highlighting the challenges that can be faced when entering the workforce. It was an eye-opening experience, finding out just how much the odds can be stacked against you without you even realising it when you join the workforce. I feel grateful to have gained such valuable knowledge. The advice and wisdom shared by these incredible individuals has given me the tools to navigate this daunting part of life. As the saying goes, “Give a man a fish, you’ll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you’ll feed him for a lifetime”. I know I will hold onto these learnings for a very long time. During the event, I also had the opportunity to network with representatives from companies such as BT Group, frog/Capgemini Invent, AIG, NBCUniversal and TJX Europe. These companies have pathways for young talent like myself to develop and thrive, and I am excited to apply for roles with them in the coming weeks and months. Thank you, once again, to Bright Network, for holding such an important event and facilitating opportunities for the next generation. We are incredibly grateful for the chance to learn, grow and connect. We are heading inexorably toward the end of the year. This is our second to last Nice Guys and Gals of 2023. So, let's get to it. Matt Wolff continues to recognize those people who help others. This week, he nominates, Justin Taylor who shares job postings every week. Stephanie Jacobson puts a lot of thought into her nominations. She wrote me yesterday, "When working at Van Wagner, Daniel Block was our intern, but he became family. And his level of nice is what guaranteed his success. Dan was the first one to contribute when my Little from Big Brothers Big Sisters needed a new computer for radiology school. He got his hands dirty no matter what the project. He texts on holidays and birthdays. And so when I ran into him in the middle of NYC this week and he gave my manager $25 because she lost her wallet and needed cab fare, it was just so...Dan. He's now a leader at Attain, a wonderful father, husband, and as always - the nicest guy." And I'd like to give a shout out to Tom Glick. We had originally planned a road trip to Ithaca to watch Cornell hockey back in March, 2020. This month was the first time since then we were able to make the trek. Getting our B Corp certification wasn't just about getting a badge. It was about showing the world that we're serious about being the best PR agency we can be, not just in terms of our work, but also in terms of our values and our impact on the world. This journey to do good and be better has taken a lot of time and effort across the team, but it's also been really rewarding. We've learned so much - from the many ways our business can impact the economic and social well-being of the communities in which we operate, to how to both measure and understand our own environmental impact. We’ve made a lot of progress, and we're not stopping there. By the end of 2024, we're aiming to hit a B Impact Score of 100. That's a pretty ambitious goal, especially with B Corp updating its standards and tools for measuring impact this year, but we're up for the challenge. So let's celebrate B Corp Month together. We JUST hired a new Senior Recruiter for our Puerto Rico office and I can't wait to see what they bring to the table! My favorite class at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University was Advertising 208 (The Big Idea in Advertising).   I still have the textbooks on our bookshelf (10 moves later). The curriculum was all about how challenger brands were catapulted by the Madison Mavericks – Ogilvy, Grey, Wells, Thompson, Doyle. My dream job was to work Ogilvy; I have interviewed there more than 12 times during my career... instead I became a journalist and the went to work Grey Group.   Ogilvy was “my agency partner” when I was at American Express.  Smart people. Remarkable work. Solid Moral Compass. This week, my dream came true. I am a Global Client Leader for WPP Ogilvy on Verizon. Over the years, I’ve found that if you enjoy diving into problems and learning how to solve them, then there is a place for you in Product. It was great chatting more about this and other key observations from my career in this recent Hispanic Career World Magazine feature from @Equal Opportunity Publications (EOP), Inc., where I talked about how my team @Capital One is focused on creating meaningful customer experiences. I became more intentional about my personal brand a few years ago. And, wow, it's lead to some amazing things... Recently, I attended an event at St. Francis College where students had the opportunity to listen to Kevin Goodman of LinkedIn on the importance of "Building Your Personal Brand." It was an opportunity for students to understand the importance of this area of their life and get resume and LinkedIn profile guidance from professionals at Northwell Health and other industry leaders. However, it was also a reminder of how my own personal brand was the main reason I knew about this event. You see, I met the wonderful Judy Jackson, who organized the gathering, on LinkedIn because of my creative outlet, Why I Left. Yes, she just so happened to leave her job over the past few years and, spoiler alert, she'll be on Season 3 😉 But, we quickly realized that some of the work we're involved with day-to-day around exposing young people to the vast industry opportunities that exist in and around NYC is nicely aligned. So, it was great to see these two worlds come together. Kevin asked students to think about the message that is associated with your name, your persona, your personality, and the product you bring to the world. That stuck with me deeply. Because, when people think of me, I want them to say, "That guy's heart is in the right place." Hopefully, you can feel that through my content. What's the message you want associated with your name? Reflecting on my career journey, here are three key lessons I wish I knew when I started in my 20s: 1. Prioritize Health and Wellness: I neglected my well-being, opting for fast food and sporadic workouts. Now, I prioritize self-care, understanding that a healthy body and mind are essential for success. 2. Embrace Resilience in the Face of Setbacks: Getting laid off multiple times early in my broadcasting career was tough, but I learned that setbacks are opportunities in disguise. By staying positive, networking, and continuously honing my skills, I opened multiple windows of opportunity. 3. Celebrate Your Achievements: In the whirlwind of work and life challenges, it's crucial to pause and acknowledge your wins. Whether it's overcoming obstacles or receiving industry recognition, taking a moment to celebrate milestones fuels motivation for the journey ahead. In the picture below, I’m with my parents at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC, accepting the American Women in Radio and Television (now Gracie) student award for a documentary on girls in gangs in Salt Lake City. The film had a few legal challenges, but I overcame them with the help of the Society of Professional Journalists legal defense fund. Remember, each experience shapes us and contributes to our growth. Honoured to receive the PRWeek UK 30 under 30 Newcomers Award. Massive thank you to Chris Grummett for nominating me and to PRWeek UK for recognising my accomplishments.   I’ve had the chance to work with v special people who give me advice, challenge and encourage me in equal measure. Thanks to them, I know what liking a job can feel like. And that's a real privilege.   Through my work at the CBI (Confederation of British Industry), I’ve helped effect Government policy change to benefit working parents, advised CEOs + DGs and built meaningful relationships along the way.   But I’m not oblivious to the pitfalls of working in high-pressure situations. No matter what your job is, high stress can have a detrimental impact on how you feel about your career, how you feel about yourself. And job unhappiness seems to crop up everywhere you look. The antidote? Starts with unlocking the powerful combo of finding a sense of purpose in your work, and properly looking after your wellbeing.   The latter we’ll hear a lot about this #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, but it’s something that matters every day. Both elements are important to feeling fulfilled at work and beyond.
