Building on the momentum of my last post, I want to delve deeper into the practical application of our vision at NewComm. Imagine a world where students not only dream up but also bring to life interventions for their communities, transforming their learning into tangible outcomes that can impact 100’s of their neighbors. (Cohort 1’s intervention “The Net Gala” currently has 60 students signed up. We estimate 100 students signed up by June) In these collaborative "studios," students from neighboring schools come together to build their learning together, breaking down traditional educational silos. They're not just learners; they become planners, creators, designers, and leaders. This hands-on approach not only enriches their educational experience but also instills a profound sense of responsibility, purpose, and community engagement. (Our first studio located on Horace Mann School’s campus is pictured below) We're still very much in the early stages of developing this concept. In fact, I am constantly hitting roadblocks, but I’m super excited about what we are building. Our aim? To not only bridge the gap between theory and practice but to also weave empathy, collaboration, and innovation into the very fabric of public education. I plan to continue this conversation this week, and would love for you to join in. Your insights are super important to us as we navigate this exciting path forward. 2 hours. About 50 purpose-passionate faculty/staff. Over 100 ideas and initiatives that help us infuse purpose work across our campus community! Last Friday, Marcus Knight and I hosted an event that we called a "Mixer on Purpose." We invited all Belmont faculty and staff to come out and participate in a collaborative brainstorming activity. The ask? Share with us how we can better engage various stakeholder groups in work that helps them discover or pursue their purpose. Attendees used color-coded cards to highlight existing initiatives worth celebrating, suggest tweaks to initiatives that need refining, and even propose wild, out-of-the-box ideas that might just surprise us! Will we be able to implement every single idea? Probably not. But as we diligently review and catalog each card, we've already uncovered some "quick wins" that will help us engage students, faculty, staff, alumni, and our wider community in this crucial endeavor. This definitely won't be the last time we gather in this way, but I'm curious: What creative methods do you use to crowdsource ideas?
