During these visits, the chairlift became more than just a mode of transportation; it symbolized the gateway to understanding and improving the inner workings of the mines. Descending into the depths, the familiar pressure on my ears served as a reminder of the unique environment in which we operated. From inspecting and evaluating operational efficiencies, each underground visit provided a wealth of insights that contributed to the advancement of our industry. Engaging with colleagues and workers underground not only facilitated crucial discussions but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and shared commitment to excellence. Emerging from the underground after a day of inspections filled me with a profound sense of purpose, knowing that our efforts were instrumental in ensuring the safety and success of mining operations. As I look back on these experiences, I am grateful for the opportunity to have witnessed firsthand the dedication and innovation driving the mining industry forward. There’s nothing I enjoy more than a robust discussion, and yesterday at the FT Mining Summit in London, I had the privilege of joining a panel on the challenges of constructing a new mine. Alongside Mikko Keto from FLSmidth, Michael Wurmser from Norge Mining, and Björn Jonsson from ABB, we delved into the topic: ‘Bridging the strategic and the technical – Lessons learnt and pitfalls to avoid when constructing a new mine’. The session was expertly moderated by Leslie Hook, FT’s Natural Resources Editor. As someone leading Projects & Development, here are a few of my key takeaways: - The local context and relationships are paramount when developing a mine. Trust, knowledge, and honouring commitments should always come first. Never underestimate the value of community goodwill. - Partnerships are crucial. Whether with governments, suppliers, or environmental groups, forging strong partnerships is essential to success. - Cross-sector collaboration and open dialogue are vital. Only by working together and listening can we drive meaningful change. We are proud to feature an interview with Jorge Monroy Trejo, one of our team members at the Zimapán mine: What position do you hold and how many years have you been in the mining industry? I am a flotation operator and I have been working in this industry for 17 years. How did you start your career in mining? When I joined the team, I was an assistant in the flotation area. There was a lot for me to learn It was difficult, but one gets accustomed to it. We always work with different minerals. I like what I do, that is why I haven't changed areas, even though it's a lot of responsibility for the results. What difficulties have you faced? The most challenging part of my job is adjusting for grade variability within the ore. We are always working to achieve optimal recoveries from our concentrates. What advice would you give to your colleagues? It's always important to put in a lot of effort and show up ready to give it your all. I know it is difficult, but we must concentrate on what we are doing to keep everybody safe. What motivates you to continue putting effort into your work? My wife and children tell me that they are proud of me and that's all the motivation I need.
