Why it matters: Life sciences/biotech remains one of the region's largest industries, and its $120,743 average wage last year outpaced the region's $99,000 median household income. Driving the news: The world's largest biotech convention — the annual signature event of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization — is at San Diego Convention Center this week, with more than 20,000 attendees. What he's saying:  Mayor Todd Gloria kicked off the conference Tuesday with a history lesson familiar to many locals: Decades ago, the city donated hundreds of acres to a new University of California campus in San Diego, reserved the Torrey Pines Mesa for science and research, and an innovation economy flourished. Gloria said it was his job to nurture San Diego's place as the country's third-largest life sciences hub. "We do that by building more housing workers can afford, improving our infrastructure to boost economic development, [and] by making sure San Diego stays at the top of the list of America's safest big cities," he said." It is a crucial area where Scotland's life sciences sector could improve with more focus, funding and coordination. 📍 North east Scotland's life sciences sector has benefitted from a coordinated approach through the Aberdeen City Region Deal, with the UK and Scottish Governments providing capital for #ONEBioHub as a focal point for sector growth alongside ONE and Scottish Enterprise. 💬 "The power of working together is very strong, but we need to identify other opportunities to increase productivity. It is not a case of once and done. There are many parts to this jigsaw. We do not have access to funding at the scale available to the rest of the UK. It feels like there is a life sciences opportunity that is not quite realised in terms of strategic focus and funding focus. We need consistent investment for the long term." said Jennifer Craw, CEO of ONE. 💬 Dr Poonam Malik, MBA, FRSE FRSB said: "If we could harness the strengths that are already there and manage and maintain them then that's the message for policymakers and government. There's something there that's working well, so we need to actually do more of it and, at the same time, increase scale-up funding." 💬 BioIndustry Association (BIA)'s Martin Turner said: "We had a major breakthrough in the spring budget when, for the first time, we saw a life sciences venture capital firm partner with a pension fund. We've heard a lot today about the shortage of scale-up capital. One of the answers to that is getting our pensions industry, which literally has trillions of pounds at its disposal, to invest even just a small fraction in venture capital and life sciences capital. If we can unlock that, it'd be transformative." #lifesciences

San Diego is one of the Big Three life science clusters in the U.S. along with Boston and San Francisco. The BIO International Convention which is the world’s largest and most comprehensive annual event for biotechnology was hosted by San Diego from June 3 to June 6. The event drew over 18,000 industry professionals and is a testament to San Diego’s vital role in the life science sector. Chris Durbin, a life science specialist in the Voit Real Estate Services- San Diego office, immersed himself in the four-day event to gain greater insight into the industry’s future and its implications for the San Diego commercial real estate market. According to Chris, “Culturally, San Diego is one of the more collaborative ecosystems, which is a factor that continues to draw top talent here.” Although the vacancy rate for lab and office space in the life science cluster is at an all-time high of 14.3% and there was a 7.2% year-over-year decrease in asking rents, Q1 statistics indicate growth: ·        2.8 MSF growth since 2014 ·        3.6 MSF in construction pipeline ·        1.65 MSF in space requirements ·        55 venture capital deals totaling $1.57B ·        $2.2B in research funding from NIH and NSF Who is moving into the market?
