In a study by Eid M and colleagues in the Caspian Journal of Internal Medicine, researchers explored how insulin resistance impacts the severity of coronary atherosclerosis in people who are neither diabetic nor overweight. They studied 112 such patients using coronary angiograms, a type of heart scan. They found a strong link between insulin resistance, measured by the HOMA-IR index (a calculation based on fasting blood sugar and insulin levels), and the severity of coronary artery disease, assessed by the Gensini score. The findings suggest that a HOMA-IR score above 5.9 could signal a higher risk for severe heart artery disease. This highlights the potential importance of checking insulin resistance in assessing heart disease risk in people without diabetes or obesity, especially since insulin resistance can be improved with lifestyle changes. — Eid M, A. Sayed Sh, A. Zaki N, et al. HOMA estimated insulin resistance as a marker for angiographic severity of coronary artery disease in non-diabetic and non-obese patients. Clinical Biochemist | Dual Master's in Digital Health and Public Health Management | COVID-19 Expert | Leader in Clinical Diagnostics | Published Scientist.
In a study analyzing 285 COVID-19 patients and 36 non-COVID-19 patients, researchers found that platelet levels and platelet-large cell ratio (P-LCR) were significant factors influencing COVID-19 severity. They developed the Fussa platelet score based on these factors, with higher scores indicating a greater likelihood of reaching higher oxygen requirements. Platelet levels increased significantly 6-10 days after onset. The Fussa platelet score could be a useful tool in determining the need for transfer to critical care hospitals. #COVID19 #Platelets #SeverityPrediction 🩸🦠🏥

"Is There a Role for Calcium Channel Blockers in the Contemporary Treatment Paradigm for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension?" This is the title of an editorial by Lewis Rubin in "Circulation", the journal of the American Heart Association, dated May 13, 2024. Among patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), acute vasoreactivity testing during right heart catheterization may identify acute "vasoresponders", for whom treatment with high-dose calcium channel blockers (CCBs) is recommended. But what about long-term outcomes? THE ANEMIAS > Anemia is known to have a decrease in the competence of blood to carry oxygen to tissues, thereby causing tissue hypoxia. It's clinical term is a decrease in the normal concentration of hemoglobin and/or erythrocytes. > Anemia is not a disease but the expression of an underlying disorder or disease; it is an important clinical marker of a disorder that could be basic or sometimes more complex. Therefore, once the diagnosis of anemia is made, the physician must determine its exact cause. ●One may ask, how does anemia develop? 1. Erythrocyte loss or destruction exceeds the maximal capacity of bone marrow erythrocyte production or 2. The bone marrow erythrocyte production os impaired. ● Some physiologic adaptation is influenced by: 1. Severity of the anemia 2. Competency of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems 3. Oxygen requirements of the individual 4. Duration of the anemia 5. Disease or condition that caused the anemia 6. Presence and severity of coexisting disease. ● Diagnosis of Anemia Anemia can impair an individual's ability to carry on activities of daily living and decrease the individual's quality of life. The diagnosis of anemia and determination of it's cause are made by using a combination of information received from the patient history, the physical examination, and the laboratory investigation. ⚕️Knowing your health status ♥️ is the goal.🔬🧪💉 Please do share this information with others 🙏🏾 #MLS #LINKEDIN #brucewrites ✍️

#Non_alcoholic_fatty_liver_disease (#NAFLD) and #metabolic_syndrome (#MetS) are intricately linked, sharing many pathophysiological mechanisms and contributing to each other's progression. #MetS is characterized by a cluster of conditions including #insulin_resistance (IR), central #obesity, #dyslipidemia, and #hypertension, all of which are major risk factors for #cardiovascular disease and type 2 #diabetes. The primary driver of #MetS is insulin resistance, often linked to visceral adiposity, which also plays a crucial role in developing NAFLD. #NAFLD represents a spectrum of liver conditions ranging from simple steatosis (fat accumulation) to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (#NASH), which can progress to #cirrhosis and #liver_cancer. Fat distribution significantly impacts metabolic health. Subcutaneous adipose tissue (#SAT) is more metabolically benign than visceral adipose tissue (#VAT), closely associated with metabolic disturbances #Non_alcoholic_fatty_liver_disease #metabolic_syndrome #insulin_resistance #liver_cancer #cirrhosis #NAFLD REF: https://lnkd.in/dgDnP_S4 https://lnkd.in/dJgpsnFH

PRP in Joint Diseases: New Approaches in Osteoarthritis Treatment Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, affects millions of people worldwide and significantly impacts their quality of life. In recent years, new approaches to treating this condition have emerged, including the promising use of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). 💉🦴 PRP acts through various mechanisms to promote joint health. The release of growth factors stimulates cell proliferation and collagen synthesis, supporting the regeneration of cartilage tissue. Additionally, PRP possesses anti-inflammatory properties, reducing joint inflammation and alleviating pain and swelling. 🌱🔄 Research in this field will contribute to defining the optimal application of PRP in osteoarthritis treatment and clarifying the long-term effects of this promising therapeutic option. 🧪🔬 #Osteoarthritis #JointHealth #PRPTreatment #MedicalResearch #Prp #PrpMed #PrpTreatments🩸🦴
