I have enjoyed learning from everybody attending the International Fresh Produce Association #ifpa Sustainability Workshops both today in Melbourne and in Brisbane last week. An informative program featuring the IFPA Director of Sustainability Tamara Muruetagoiena and Ben Hoodless Managing Director. Great work also by Tim Withers and Robyn Swanwick in making it happen. Some of my takeaways: 🍏There were some great perspectives along the value chain and a greater focus on the “what” and the “how.” 🍏it is a low carbon agri-industry that presents many opportunities to be regenerative. 🍏Banks like CBA are offering Agri-Green loans to finance sustainable infrastructure and projects with potentially favourable terms. 🍏As highlighted last week in the news, it has challenges around single-use packaging, especially plastic. 🍏The Environment Ministers communique last Friday provided clear indication that packaging regulation is coming. 🍏This industry needs to connect and communicate with the public to promote the benefits of the industry and acknowledge the challenges that it hasn’t solved - yet! 🍏Engage with related industry organisations and solutions providers to innovate and give more “how.” 🍏Not to be missed is the social benefit of the horticulture industry and the way it nourishes the Australian population - we should be proud. Also pleased that we at CHEP were able to sponsor the workshops both in Australia and New Zealand along with Hort Innovation. #regenerativesupplychains #circulareconomy #zerowasteworld

How do we work on halving foodwaste? One of the solutions is regarding unavoidable foodlosses not as waste but as still valuable and nutritious ingredients to be upcycled to food! It already has cost so much energy in production so therefore these sidestreams must be upcycled to food and food ingredients. How can we work on making this the new normal! We know! 3 days, 1 mission: Prepping our food waste warriors for B Corp certification. After a thorough evaluation, the Flat Iron team excelled in all areas: Environment, Sourcing and Society. Highlights of their commitment include: ✅ Responsible Sourcing: With a keen eye on responsible sourcing, Flat Iron knows the exact origins of their ingredients, sourcing the majority directly from small-scale farms or cooperatives. They've even cultivated their own Flat Iron Herd with Charles Ashbridge in Yorkshire, renowned for top-tier beef bred through regenerative farming practices. These heritage breed cattle are fed on a mixture of fresh grass, homemade hay, rolled barley, molasses and sugar beet. ✅ Environmental Impact: They're working hard to reduce their environmental footprint throughout their supply chain – even assisting their partner farms! – by taking action to cut down on energy and water use, switching to renewable energy and using energy-efficient equipment. What are some of the key drivers for boosting recycling rates worldwide? ➤ Digitalisation is key for achieving global recycling targets and adapting to diverse regulatory requirements ➤ Increased transparency and optimisation in recycling processes can open new doors for partnerships across the value chain ➤ Taking action now and participating in initiatives like HolyGrail 2.0, the Alliance’s pilot project trialling the use of digital watermarks on plastic packaging, are crucial to driving meaningful progress in sustainable packaging These insights and more were shared during a recent episode of Packaging Europe's podcast, where host Elisabeth Skoda caught up with Jan 't Hart, the AIM - European Brands Association project manager for the HolyGrail 2.0 project, and Pranav Goenka, one of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste senior advisors. Together, they discussed the role of digital watermarking in enhancing sorting and recycling rates, HolyGrail 2.0’s final R&D phase ahead of market entry, the launch of a pilot in France in 2024, and steps for large-scale market adoption.
