Most frequent question I get asked by younger folks: "How do I get into a cybersecurity career?" My best and most concise answer: Join one of the U.S. military branches specifically for those roles... and giving into my own bias, the U.S. Coast Guard 😀 Yes, there are absolutely other and equally successful ways to achieve the same objective and the military isn't for everybody, but I do believe it's the easy button answer for the bulk of people who ask. Let's assume you have two paths as a future officer or enlisted member. You're going to go through some type of initial military training and then focused attention on one of the many cyber disciplines. Assuming you aren't a dirt bag, after an average officer/enlisted career of just 4 years, you'll come out as a holistically skilled, experienced, and disciplined worker with near limitless employment opportunities. I don't know of any other way to compress those three elements in such a short time. You'll probably also get some great stories and friend that you'll have forever, which are worth more than quite frankly anything short of your current or future family... Most of you will complete that small commitment, but many will go on to 10 or even 20 year careers, which bring additional breadth and experience as well as benefits like a pension and life-time medical, which through personal stability enables the onboarding of greater professional risk later on in life. · USCG - https://lnkd.in/ehUmS6bu U.S. Coast Guard · USN - https://lnkd.in/eAYy4xiB US Navy · USMC - https://lnkd.in/ebrDiAUp United States Marine Corps · USAF - https://lnkd.in/eU_jp7Rs United States Air Force · USA - https://lnkd.in/e42ZqnBu US Army #cybercareers #military #service

Gary Berman, Founder & Host of The "Cyber Hero Adventures Show" at cyberheroescomics.com. Creator of The CyberHero Adventures: Defenders of the Digital Universe
I write often on this page about the shortage of cybersecurity experts compared to businesses' need for them. About 500,000cybersecurity jobs are going unfilled in this crucial industry. As we consider the nation's evolving cybersecurity and national security needs, one group always comes to mind: U.S. service veterans. Why? Because their military training and experience uniquely equip them to transition into the cybersecurity industry. That's one reason the Cyber Hero vCISO Network will work with veterans as we serve the cybersecurity needs of SMEs nationwide. Watch this recent interview I did with Antonio "T" Scurlock, himself a retired Naval (Information Warfare qualified) Officer. Learn about his work to help veterans through the National Initiative for Cybersecurity, Careers and Studies. Founder of Solve Transition | Professor Cybersecurity | Chief Security Officer | On a mission to train and mentor Military & Police Veterans to Cybersecurity Career Success
My mission: I'm excited to share with you the mission I'm deeply committed to and why it's so close to my heart. Those of you who know me, know of my passion, deep insights, and experience in the military and law enforcement sectors, as well as my C-level and academic commitment to cybersecurity. My mission is clear: To help military and police veterans transition into cybersecurity and information technology careers, and to provide mentoring and coaching services to help them along the way. Why this mission? It stems from my conviction in veterans' tremendous potential. Having worked closely with many veterans, I've seen firsthand their resilience, problem-solving skills, and unwavering dedication. These characteristics make them ideal candidates for employment in cybersecurity and IT, where their distinct viewpoints and experiences are crucial. Choosing this purpose also allows me to give back to those whom I have shared experiences with while we served our country and communities. It is about honouring their contributions and ensuring that they have full, meaningful professions after they have served. This purpose perfectly matches my enthusiasm for cybersecurity and my desire to make a positive difference. By mentoring and coaching veterans, I hope to not only help them succeed in their careers but also contribute to a stronger, more diverse cybersecurity sector. I encourage you to join me on this journey of empowerment and support. Together, we can generate opportunities, promote growth, and make a long-term difference in the lives of veterans and the cybersecurity industry. #EmpoweringVeterans #CybersecurityMission #MentorshipMatters
