There’s the Kentucky Derby. There’s the Super Bowl. And there's the announcement of the Grow-NY Finalists. Every year, it’s an exciting day that brings out the bettor in all of us at Born Collective. Once our partners at the Grow-NY Food & Agriculture Competition reveal the 20 startups to vie for $3 million in prize money at the Grow-NY Summit in November, we enjoy learning about each finalist and placing our bets (usually beer) about who we think will take home a prize. Sometimes we're right...but we’re always astounded at the innovation the companies are bringing to our region. Together, regardless of who wins, they bring out the “better" in all of food and ag. Learn more about this year's finalists --> https://lnkd.in/du2wewGH

This is a special one for me – Root Global has raised 8m€ from Point Nine led by Christoph Janz and is looking for new talents to join the team! During Christmas season in 2021, Maurice passed by my home to validate the very earliest ideas around Root together with BEWITAL agri GmbH & Co . KG. A nascent idea back then which was to meet brutal product-market fit in the subsequent years. Yet none of the following success really came as a surprise to me – in my chats with Maurice, he and his team continue to impress me for three things that inevitably pave the road to growth: 1️⃣ Customer Centricity: I don’t know any team that is more customer obsessed and is tailoring their go-to-market motion better to their unique target audience. Exemplified par excellence by their dedicated fundraising announcement towards customers: https://lnkd.in/d8VzCByj 2️⃣ Execution Excellence: The performance culture at Root is high – everyone is expected and enabled to do the best work they have ever done. 3️⃣ Clarity of Vision: Conversations are always centered on tomorrow – strategic foresight paired with ambitious tactical execution! 🍎 If you are looking to build Berlin’s next rocket ship, now is the time to join: https://lnkd.in/dUxDwkie

What an inspiring start to the EIT Food Next Bite 2024! The opening speech was a powerful reminder of why we’re all here – united by the shared mission to transform global food systems for healthier, net-zero, and resilient outcomes. Key takeaways: 1) Collaboration is essential – systemic change doesn’t happen overnight, but by working together and building trust, we can accelerate innovation. 2) The food system still faces big challenges – from food waste to the impact of agriculture on our planet, we have more to do. 3) EIT Food’s role – with over 600 startups supported in 2023 alone and €209 million in investment attracted, we’re seeing real impact, but we must push even further. #NextBite is all about connection – this event brings together thought leaders, and change-makers, investors, partners and innovators. Let’s use the time to think ambitiously and build relationships that will drive the change we want to see. RisingFoodStars are so excited to be part of this community and can’t wait to see what comes next. Let’s make the most of these days together as we collaborate, and accelerate, the transformation our food systems need! 🎉 Exciting News from Octavia/Smithville, OK! The grand opening of the Three Rivers Meat Company, supported by the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, marks a pivotal moment for local food accessibility, food sovereignty and tribal economic development. 🏭 Facility Features: As a USDA-certified meat processing facility that includes a retail area and cafe, Three Rivers offers an array of fresh meats, produce, and value-added products. 🌱 Community Impact: This initiative greatly reduces the travel time for residents who previously drove an hour to buy fresh produce and meats, enhancing local access to nutritious food. 🤝 Partnership Dynamics: This project is the result of a collaboration among tribal members Dusty Nichols, CRPC®, Brandon White, Jason Hering, and Dr. Brad Morgan, featuring an on-site USDA inspector to enable interstate meat distribution. 🍴 Strategic Fit and Food Sovereignty: Aligned with the Choctaw Nation's 2023 launch of the Choctaw Beef program, Three Rivers serves as a cornerstone for the tribe's efforts to achieve food sovereignty—ensuring the community's ability to access and control their own food supply. 🥩 Retail and Dining: Beyond processing, the facility boasts extensive freezer and cold storage, a cafe with fresh and deli meats, house-made cheese, and precooked items, enriching the community's culinary landscape. For more insights on how this project enhances food sovereignty and supports the Choctaw Nation, visit IndianGaming.org. #ThreeRiversMeatCompany #ChoctawNation #FoodSovereignty #LocalFood #Sustainability #CommunityDevelopment

Scaling Hardware & Technology For Climate Adaptation | Founder of Babylon Micro-Farms Inc. | CEO | TEDx Speaker | Forbes 30 Under 30
Being the Founder of an AgTech startup comes with its fair share of challenges. One of the most common? → Getting prospects to understand the types of value that our Micro-Farms offer. Whether that’s from a business standpoint or a personal one. Some fail to realize that people don’t partner with Babylon just because we bring a fun spin to traditional farming. People partner with Babylon because we’re introducing people to a much higher quality product. That not only makes your food last longer…and taste better!! But also: 👉🏻 Uses 0 pesticides or chemicals 👉🏻 Has higher nutritional value 👉🏻 Utilizes 90% less water 👉🏻 And a lot more flavor. Listen to Daniel Lubetzky's story and how he scaled KIND primarily by bootstrapping and growing the company with profits and non-equity investment (debt and other capital structures) until bringing in an Institutional PE investor. It is a great lesson to entrepreneurs. I often counsel companies that equity is a great option, but not the only option. They should be selecting equity investors not only for the capital -- but also the expertise, experience in areas the entrepreneur is not strong, key relationships with potential customers and/or suppliers and guidance along the way. For working capital and capital for organic growth, #commercialbank loans and other #alternativelending options is likely the best choice.
KIND is a healthy snack company whose value proposition is to do the kind thing for your body, your taste buds, and your world. trib.al/uP96g8G That’s what Daniel Lubetzky, the brand’s founder and now its chief impact officer, told Fortune in a recent interview. In 2004, frustrated by the dearth of healthy snacks in New York supermarkets, Lubetzky launched KIND—a first-of-its-kind fruit and nut bar that he’d eventually sell to Mars for $5 billion. Lubetzky told Fortune about his upbringing, his first jobs, what he looks for in entrepreneurs on Shark Tank, and how he scraped together the funds to allow KIND to enduringly dominate its category.
