Working alongside governments, local communities, and Indigenous groups, the project has funded essential research into the ecological and economic impacts of these initiatives. A significant milestone is the ongoing effort to establish the 500,000-square-kilometer Rāhui Nui protection zone, aimed at preserving marine ecosystems through the traditional practice of rāhui. Help Protect Our Reef with Safe Anchoring Practices: As stewards of the Great Barrier Reef, we all have a role in preserving this fragile ecosystem. By following a few simple steps, you can help prevent damage to coral and safeguard the reef for future generations: ✅ Use public moorings where available, and avoid anchoring in protected zones. ✅ Anchor in sand or mud, well away from coral—look for flat, smooth areas using your sounder. ✅ Never wrap anchor rope or chain around bommies or coral heads. ✅ Anchor before dark and check your swing room for overnight stays. ✅ Use your sand anchor and reef pick properly to minimize impact. ✅ Motor toward your anchor when retrieving it, and pull it up when the line is vertical. ✅ If your anchor is caught, free it by hand—never force it with your boat. ✅ Regularly check to ensure your anchor isn’t dragging. The ReefTO Taskforce has three objectives! Today, we're highlighting the first. Honouring the decades of work by Elders to assert their cultural authority and rights to sea country and driving genuine partnerships across the Reef, ReefTO is empowering Reef Traditional Owners through the Taskforce to shape the future of the Reef and its interconnected Country. Together, we're building genuine partnerships to protect, manage and nurture the Reef for generations to come. ReefTO has three powerful priorities that we're focused on for the next 2-3 years. Our first objective is to engage with Reef Traditional Owners on options for a Sea Country Alliance (Reef-wide and regionally) and implement the preferred option. How will we do that? Very pleased to see the Global Fund for Coral Reefs-supported programme featured in CNN Indonesia’s long-form multimedia article. Our partner, Meizani Irmadhiany, Executive Chair of Konservasi Indonesia, is a passionate advocate for coral reef conservation and took the CNN team to dive sites to see GFCR-priority coral reefs firsthand. Indonesia is home to 16% of the world’s coral reef areas and approximately 60% of the world’s coral species. The value of goods and services provided by coral reefs in Indonesia—including fisheries, shoreline protection, and tourism—is estimated at US$1.6 billion per year. However, these precious ecosystems face numerous threats, from climate impacts to overfishing and unsustainable tourism practices. Seaweed farming is Indonesia’s largest marine aquacultural activity, and continues to grow at an impressive rate. It provides new sources of income, in particular for women, allieviates near-shore fishing pressure, and reduces eutrophication by removing excess nutrients that degrade coral reef ecosystems. However, the rapid spatial expansion of the sector can also detrimental to coral habitats. KI is working with local communities and partners to ensure new farms avoid crictical coral habitats while also providing alternatives to plastic used in the farming process. The new CNN features includes a highlight of the recently announced first-of-its-kind US$35 million debt-for-nature swap focused on coral reefs supported and co-financed by GFCR. The Governments of the United States and the Republic of Indonesia, along with key GFCR implementing partners—such as Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) and Konservasi Indonesia (KY)—signed the agreement to protect Indonesia’s coral reef ecosystems. This groundbreaking deal will help scale conservation efforts for sites hosting resilient coral refugia, including the Bird’s Head Seascape, the Lesser Sunda, and Banda Seascape. These regions span hundreds of thousands of hectares, providing habitats for over 75% of all coral species and more than 3,000 other marine species. Unfortunately, these ecosystems are the threatened by human impacts, including climate change and local stressors. United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), together with GFCR Coalition members, is committed to protecting #coralreefs and ensuring their resilience for future generations. 1854-2024: 170 YEARS OF SERVICE TO MALTA MARITIME COMMUNITY AND PLANTNG OF 10,000 TREES THE GOLLCHER GROUP is celebrating another significant milestone – its 170th anniversary. The History of the Gollcher Group goes back to 1854 when Olof Fredrik Gollcher, a Swede who settled in Malta established O.F. Gollcher & Sons. When he first arrived in Malta a few years earlier in 1848 on his father`s vessel “Swalan”, few would have thought that the business he was to found would prosper and become a leader in Malta’s maritime industry. As the company proudly commemorates its 170th anniversary, it is fitting to recall its generous legacy to Malta`s transport heritage by continuing to offer a wide range of services to the community:, Ship and Liner Agency, Freight Forwarding, Courier, Lloyds Agency (since 1883), P&I Correspondents and Marine Surveyors, and Marine Surveying, Malta Ship Registration and Travel. Inspired by the motto ” Framåt ”, which means “forward”, the Group is strategically positioned to adapt and navigate through challenges posed by the fast changing industries in which it operates. At this time an ESG initiative in honour of this milestone was announced - the planting of 10,000 trees in Africa.
