Unlike photovoltaic (PV) systems that directly convert sunlight into electricity, solar thermal power systems use mirrors or lenses to concentrate sunlight onto a small area, heating a fluid to produce steam. This steam drives a turbine connected to a generator, producing electricity. The key components of a solar thermal power system include solar collectors, a heat transfer fluid, thermal energy storage, and a power block. These systems offer several advantages, including the ability to generate electricity even when the sun is not shining by using thermal energy storage. They can also be combined with traditional power plants to provide reliable, renewable energy. Did you know that, for the first year on record, combined electricity generation from wind & solar is expected to surpass generation from coal in 2024, according to the EIA? This is due in part to the fact that 99% of coal plants are now more expensive to operate than new renewable energy plants, as recently reported by Forbes. Origis Energy’s recent 200 MW solar project in New Mexico, which was built on the site of a former coal plant, is another important example of this trend. The company's Escalante project is now delivering enough renewable energy to power an estimated 63,000 homes & has enabled Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, Inc.’s members to reach 50% clean energy used in 2025, while meeting the requirements of the state’s Energy Transition Act five years ahead of schedule.
